THOMAS.gov Link Clean-Up
The Law Library of Congress is planning an internal Wikipedia clean-up event on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at the Library of Congress, to update and correct links currently pointing to THOMAS.gov. The Library retired THOMAS.gov in early July and links to that site now redirect to Congress.gov, though some links are not able to redirect to the specific content of the original. Such links now bring users to the Congress.gov homepage. Rather than rely solely on redirects, the Library seeks to be proactive on Wikipedia and adjust links to go directly to their new location, saving time for users and preventing possible broken links in the future.
Law Library and Office of the Chief Information Officer staff who work on Congress.gov will participate in this event. The project does not include making any edits or comments on matters of substance within Wikipedia articles, but is strictly limited to technical corrections on links to THOMAS.gov. Staff participants will receive guidance on Wikipedia best practices, a Wikipedia profile template clearly identifying them as Library employees acting in an official capacity, and training on making resource updates on Wikipedia. When a staff member updates a link, they will include a note with the edit indicating it to be an update of an outdated link through the THOMAS.gov Link Clean-Up project.
