Please join
Wikipedia Connection, a student organization at the
Ohio State University, for a fun, inclusive one-day event that brings together diverse communities to create and improve Wikipedia articles related to women in the arts. Despite its wide reach, Wikipedia suffers from a severe gender imbalance: since most editors are men, articles conform to men's interests and perspectives. In an effort to change this, we are gathering diverse women and allies together to celebrate women's cultural achievements and discuss openly ongoing challenges caused by structural sexism
Food (including vegetarian options), refreshments, and Wikipedia goodies will be provided. Please bring a laptop, and take a few seconds to RSVP
here! Anyone with an interest in the cause and editing is welcome to join - no prior editing experience is required! Please be aware of our
Safe Space Policy.
Everyone is welcome! While this event takes place on campus and is run by a university student organization, you do not have to be affiliated with the Ohio State University to attend. We welcome students, faculty, staff, and Wikipedians from all around the area to join us, regardless of skill level. Women are particularly encouraged to attend, along with anyone with a background, focus, or interest in art (painting, writing, culture, etc.).
What to expect:
The event will begin with a presentation of Wikipedia's gender-inbalance, and a quick guide to editing. This is a casual drop-in event. Participants are encouraged to stay for as long as they wish. Food, snacks, and refreshments will be provided, along with some goodies.
No Wikipedia editing experience necessary; tutorials will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers. If you are unfamiliar with Wikipedia, it's easy to get started with this
guided tutorial. Experienced editors will be providing help with editing throughout the event.
Black Lunch Table (list of visual artists of the African Diaspora who articles need improvement or creation).
Worldwide artists to create
Wikipedia Connection collaborated with the instructors and students of a section of INTSTDS 4850: Understanding the Global Information Society to produce the following list of artists from around the world who may be
notable enough for their own article! Take a look at the full document for a list of all the artists, potential sources, and a short description of them. We have also listed some of the artists and sources below:
Sumalee Montano, actress and voice actress. Most recently voice acted for X-Men: Destiny, Dead Island, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, and Transformers: Prime.

In addition to improvements to articles on female artists from Columbus and beyond, several contributions were the result of translating articles on Latino artists from Spanish and Portuguese into English, thanks to the support of multiple professors and their students from Ohio State's Department of Spanish and Portuguese. In addition, several improvements were made to articles as suggested by a section of INTSTDS 4850: Understanding the Global Information Society as part of their assignment in learning about how Wikipedia is used around the world.
