Where is the dispute?

Andre Agassi, and Talk:Andre Agassi

Who is involved?

Just a list of the users involved. For example:

What is the dispute?

The dispute is whether Andre Agassi is an Iranian-American or just an American. I think the talk page is explanatory. I do not wish to engage in back and forth edit reverts as that is counterproductive. I believe that I provided adequate sources that shows Andre Agassi as a notable Iranian-American. He is recognized as such, having an Iranian father (of Assyrian and Armenian descent - he is still Iranian). I would like to know Wikipedia's policy regarding biographies because it gets confusing. I understand the need to prove notability in regards to religion, but not ethnicity. What is the difference between Andre Agassi, Catherine Bell ; who is half Iranian and claims being Iranian-American; Christiane Amanpour; who is a British-born Iranian-American (naturalized); and Pierre Omidyar, another Iranian-American? The category Americans of Iranian descent has been on Agassi's page for a long time. Other Iranian-Americans have that category on their page, yet Agassi does and he cannot be "Iranian-American"? Why are some pages on Wikipedia held to a different standard? I am confused. All of these people are recognized as Iranian-American by newspapers and the Iranian community (not to mention the National Iranian American Council. I would like help on this issue to help me in editing in the future. Thank you.

What would you like to change about this?

I have stated above where I am having trouble. If it turns out we need arbitration, then that is fine. I just want to make sure I am following Wikipedia policy regarding biography pages. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what constitutes "notable" (not speaking about religion here; I understand that issue). The other user has not made clear enough to me why edits were reverted. He or she has to explained the difference between the above named Iranian-Americans who are all listed as Iranian-American.

How do you think we can help?

I would like to know if I am doing anything wrong, or if my sources are considered invalid by Wikipedia standards. I would also like to ask someone for advice regarding what steps I can take if mediation doesn't work. I would like to follow proper procedure. Thank you in advance.

Mediator notes

Generally, it's best to avoid identity markers if that person does not strongly identify with that aspect of their self. It could be regarded as somewhat presumptuous on a BLP. Best to stick with as generic a descriptor as possible. I'd like to hear this argued, though. Xavexgoem ( talk) 07:52, 5 January 2011 (UTC) reply
