This file has been made by myself with the help of ArcView 10 GIS software. Scanned data are out of: Conservation Science Western Australia Journal, Volume Nine, Number One, October 2013. It can be freely consulted on https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/about-us/science-and-research/76-publications-and-resources/103-conservation-science-wa-journal and the Department of Parks and Wildlife states: ″Conservation Science Western Australia is produced to ensure that such material is publicly available after it is peer reviewed by external scientists." - I've been heavily involved in editing the Political views page, and it seems to me that this discussion hinges on how one views
WP:DECORATIVE in this particular instance – and I'll be the first to admit that this is something subjective: how does NFCC#8 come into play here? I can appreciate the nom's perspective that readers do not need to know what the person's face looked like. (If one extends that line of reasoning, the same could be said of his bio page, of any bio page.) But, when one considers the pivotal role played by the person in the photo, in the history of studies of the page subject, he really is the one person who towers over the rest, sort of the George Washington of the field. The criterion here is not simply whether it is possible to understand the page subject without the image, but whether the reader's understanding would be less. It seems to me, subjectively, that the concern about minimal use, thus limiting use to the bio page, does not necessarily preclude using the image on a second page. --

Pictures of deceased persons, in articles about that person
are acceptable. WP:NFCI#10 Otherwise, without critical commentary about the image itself in the article, it is not. Seeing a picture of someone active in or important to a topic does not increase the reader's understanding of the topic, and omission is not detrimental to the reader's understanding of the topic. - Keep in Paul Lazarsfeld, but remove from Political views of American academics#Ford Foundation. The discussion about this image started at WT:NFC#Clarification needed and then was moved here. As I stated in the WT:NFC thread, Wikipedia does allow non-free images of deceased individuals to be uploaded and used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone artices about the individual in question, but there tends to need to be a much stronger justification for non-free use in other articles. As JJMC89 points out above, I'm not seeing how the way the file is currently being used in the "Poitical views ..." article provides the context required by WP:NFCC#8. Lazarsfeld might have been the first to conduct a "survey of faculty political opinions in the United States", but the reader doesn't need to see a non-free photo of him to understand any article content about that survey, etc. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 00:26, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

The import of the statement regarding the person depicted can be more than sufficiently expressed by text alone. To the extent the statement has imperfectly conveyed elements, those relate to what that person said and wrote, not his appearance, so the image does not increase a reader's understanding of the statement related to the image. This file has been made by myself with the help of ArcView 10 GIS software. Scanned data are out of: Conservation Science Western Australia Journal, Volume Nine, Number One, October 2013. It can be freely consulted on https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/about-us/science-and-research/76-publications-and-resources/103-conservation-science-wa-journal and the Department of Parks and Wildlife states: ″Conservation Science Western Australia is produced to ensure that such material is publicly available after it is peer reviewed by external scientists." - I've been heavily involved in editing the Political views page, and it seems to me that this discussion hinges on how one views
WP:DECORATIVE in this particular instance – and I'll be the first to admit that this is something subjective: how does NFCC#8 come into play here? I can appreciate the nom's perspective that readers do not need to know what the person's face looked like. (If one extends that line of reasoning, the same could be said of his bio page, of any bio page.) But, when one considers the pivotal role played by the person in the photo, in the history of studies of the page subject, he really is the one person who towers over the rest, sort of the George Washington of the field. The criterion here is not simply whether it is possible to understand the page subject without the image, but whether the reader's understanding would be less. It seems to me, subjectively, that the concern about minimal use, thus limiting use to the bio page, does not necessarily preclude using the image on a second page. --

Pictures of deceased persons, in articles about that person
are acceptable. WP:NFCI#10 Otherwise, without critical commentary about the image itself in the article, it is not. Seeing a picture of someone active in or important to a topic does not increase the reader's understanding of the topic, and omission is not detrimental to the reader's understanding of the topic. - Keep in Paul Lazarsfeld, but remove from Political views of American academics#Ford Foundation. The discussion about this image started at WT:NFC#Clarification needed and then was moved here. As I stated in the WT:NFC thread, Wikipedia does allow non-free images of deceased individuals to be uploaded and used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone artices about the individual in question, but there tends to need to be a much stronger justification for non-free use in other articles. As JJMC89 points out above, I'm not seeing how the way the file is currently being used in the "Poitical views ..." article provides the context required by WP:NFCC#8. Lazarsfeld might have been the first to conduct a "survey of faculty political opinions in the United States", but the reader doesn't need to see a non-free photo of him to understand any article content about that survey, etc. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 00:26, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
- Remove from Political views of American academics, the only article where a use is currently disputed. The import of the statement regarding the person depicted can be more than sufficiently expressed by text alone. To the extent the statement has imperfectly conveyed elements, those relate to what that person said and wrote, not his appearance, so the image does not increase a reader's understanding of the statement related to the image.
