Reason
High resolution (brushstrokes, excluding sfumato techniques, are visible), and visually intriguing (composition, period clothing, foreground/background, etc) painting by Gilbert Stuart (
self portrait FP), painted in 1782. This painting is important and notable because it was not only his first successfully completed full-length portrait, it brought recognition to Mr. Stuart and allowed him to open up his own studio. (According to our article, this painting was completed at Benjamin West's studio.)
Support. Proportions seem right, I'm happy to trust the source as regards colour. It could probably be a little bigger (the original is nearly two and a half metres tall), but I'm happy that it's big enough. As far as I can see, it's a great candidate.
