Original - In 1941
Philippe Halsman met the
surrealist artist
Salvador Dalí and they began to collaborate in the late 1940s. The 1948 work Dali Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three
cats flying, a bucket of thrown water, and
Salvador Dalí in mid air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí's work Leda Atomica which can be seen in the right of the photograph behind the two cats. Halsman reported that it took 28 attempts to be satisfied with the result. This is one of the earlier versions, the copyright for which was not renewed, putting it in Public domain.
Support. A classic, and well-captioned. Something approximating that caption should be added to the image description page.--

Given that it's only one person claiming that, with everyone else pointing out that he's wrong, I think we can presume it's fine =)

WP could host the picture anyway, based on the Library of Congress data, so even if commons deletes it (which seems unlikely) it could be moved here.

Support, assuming it really is PD. Halsman & Dali rock!
One does wonder how they were able to toss the cats 28 times. Welder's gloves? Stuffed animals? --
