Just above the locomotive, that stained-glass effect on the background is a heat distortion from smoke or something? It looks odd, so I'd like to figure out what it is before supporting. Adam Cuerden(

Yes, that is heat haze owing to the exhaust vent on the top of the loco. --

Adam, that's the exhaust haze of the locomotive's engine. These locomotives run on a diesel engine. The power generated by the diesel engine is then converted to electricity. This electricity then runs electric motors which turn the locomotive's wheels. Therefore the name "
diesel-electric locomotive". There is a brief description here:

SD70M-2, it has a 16 cylinder diesel engine:

So what? Here, we're still running engines that were built in the 1960s... such as
VR_Class_Dv12 - they don't look any different in older pictures. --
