John Pack Lambert (

Comment Relatively easy for them to be devoid of adventure aspects. We define
adventure films as focusing on extensive travels, swashbuckling, piracy, and treasure hunting. A Fistful of Dollars lacks any of these aspects, and the setting is limited to a single town. The solitary protagonist is exploiting a
gang war to achieve his own goals. The film derives elements of its plot from the crime novel
Red Harvest, which was not a Western to begin with.
Dimadick (

This in no way defends the non-stanards subdivision of films of the western genre, when they are generally seen to all represent the same genre.
John Pack Lambert (

The key factor in adventure is travel. Piracy and the others are just subject examples. While A Fistful of Dollars is set in one town, Clint Eastwood is a stranger who arrives and leaves, and we don't know where he is from or going or how far his journey is taking him. Shane is another example. Any Western that features drifters, bounty hunters, cattle drives, wagon trains, stagecoaches, cavalry expeditions or railroads is surely an adventure – the only ones that are not would be the likes of Rio Bravo where it all happens in the same location and everyone is local. However, as JPL says, the genre cannot be sub-divided artificially like this – there must be a clear cross-genre as in comedy, musical or horror Westerns.
No Great Shaker (
talk) 15:20, 23 August 2021 (UTC)reply
Comment Drifters and wanderers are not out of place in either modern or historical films, without making these films
Neo-Westerns. Just about any
road movie will feature characters that aimlessly wander around a country or two. Railroads are too commonplace to consider them a key element of adventure films. Neither
Murder on the Orient Express (1974 film), nor
The Lady Vanishes are adventure films, despite their focus on train passengers. I agree that sub-division is artificial, that is why I did not vote in this occasion. The Western has several subgenres, but several of Wikipedia's genre classification do not seem to reflect any sources.
Dimadick (

Key setting of westerns is the
American frontier. But "adventure" is not so much "travel", as just having the "action" set in a place the reader/listener/viewer is not from. - jc37 17:38, 23 August 2021 (UTC)reply
Comment The setting is not essential to the genre. Several classical westerns are either set in Mexico or in Canada (particularly those depicting the
Klondike Gold Rush, overlapping with the
Northern genre). Neo-Westerns tend to be set in the modern
Western United States,
Space Westerns may not be set on planet Earth at all, and
Osterns often transfer the conventions of the Western to the
Eurasian Steppe. The genre boundaries can often be unclear.
George R. R. Martin has written an interesting essay on how genre boundaries are often less than obvious. He pointed that several characters and situations can easily fit in a Western story, a science fiction story, or a fantasy story with only minor changes. The "tall, lean wrangler" who ambushes the protagonist can easily transform into a "tall, lean spaceman" or a "tall, lean elven lord".

Nominator's rationale: Wikipedia does not have a comprehensive scheme of using the category system to segregate the foreign films shot in a country from the domestic films shot in a country. We normally just categorize them together, and subcategorize by jurisdiction (e.g. specific city or prefecture) where possible and known. And no, the parent category isn't large enough to need this, either -- adding everything here to that category still wouldn't even get it to 200 articles, precisely because many films are already subcatted by city or prefecture.

Merge per nom We typically categorize by shooting location because the films tend to use a location's historic buildings and geographic features, that may be of interest to readers. Keep; but possibly consider a more consistent structure of this category, its sisters, and its nieces. The category was placed on a too high level in the category tree, which may have given a weird impression. I just moved it from
Category:Greek colonies to
Category:Greek colonies by origin, which is more suitable. As can be seen, this is just one of a plethora of categories naming by which `tribe' or from which city (state) colonies were formed. IMHO, this is quite appropriate, at least for colonies founded in pre-hellenistic times, since there really was no political unity Greece in those times. On the other hand, just browsing, I find a few categorisations I do not understand. (E. g., Why is
Korčula but not
Rome categorised in
Category:Trojan colonies; and should that category really be a subcategory of
Category:Greek colonies by origin? Actually, I think that in the antiquity, and also later, there was almost a sport to provide Trojan origin for one's own people.)

Keep; the rethinking of the category tree which
JoergenB has provided seems a good direction. --

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus. Procedural relisting after
User:JoergenB inappropriately removed the CfD tag.

My sincere apologies, @
Marcocapelle and
Fayenatic london! I did not intend to remove the CfD listing, and was not aware of having committed this (as you mention) rather inappropriate act. I don't understand how this happened. Possibly, I was looking at an older version, and mistakenly editing this; but, if so, the system must have sent me the standard warning about editing an old version, which I should have observed. Of course, the listing should not have been removed until some decision has been reached.

Nominator's rationale: Per
WP:EGRS, this is intersection is not "recognized as a distinct and unique cultural topic in its own right."

Merge - this category was created by me as a Wikipedia editor insisted on inaccurately categorizing
Murray Rothbard and others as
Jewish anarchists - this category seemed to be a compromise for them. I did not consider
WP:EGRS at the time.

The result of the discussion was:rename. Per other discussions that closed in favor of "squares" only. bibliomaniac15 19:31, 3 September 2021 (UTC)reply
Nominator's rationale: To match the parents for each nation e.g.
Category:Squares in Australia, rather than the generic international parent. Note: I have not nominated New Zealand, because Dunedin does have one called "Plaza". –

Support -- I would have suggested including the NZ case, as i expect it is a square by a fancy name.

See related discussionhere which proposes that the titles should be "Squares and plazas".

Those related discussions have all been closed as keep using just "Squares". –

Nominator's rationale: Excessive differentiation - not defining. Being Jewish does not appear to have affected their work as botanists. All are already in botanist categories
