Nominator's rationale: The head article
mergers and acquisitions treats both types of corporate combinations together, noting that the distinction between a merger and an acquisition is often more legal than commercial, and notes that commercially both types of transactions generally result in the consolidation of assets and liabilities under one entity, and the distinction between a "merger" and an "acquisition" is less clear.
The distinction between a merger and an acquisition is too fuzzy to support separate categories, so we should use the more inclusive form. --

Support -- There might be a case for splitting agreed and contested takeover bids, but some start off as contested and end off as agreed.

The result of the discussion was:delete by merging to
Category:Operas set in Europe, because at the time of closure it only contains sub-categories and those are not directly in that parent. –

Nominator's rationale: Pointless intermediate category. All constituents are other categories and no relevant article would not fit into one or other of these categories

Comment - 'Operas set in Scandinavia' are not necessarily part of 'Scandinavian Culture' - e.g. Ambroise Thomas's opera 'Hamlet', or Faccio's 'Amleto'. No other country or region XXX with
Category:Operas set in XXX has as a parent
Category:XXXian culture.
Category:Scandinavian culture is therefore not a valid parent category for the category under discussion, and I have removed it - what would be needed is the (so-far non-existent)
Category:Scandinavia in fiction. As regards the other 'regions', there are two relevant ones;
Category:Operas set in Iberia, which is presently up for deletion, and
Category:Operas set in the Low Countries which soon will be; and all for the same reason; they are arbitrary groupings (as regards the concept of opera) all of which are simply and only the parents of
Category:Operas set in XXX, their constitutent countries --

Support idea, as a trivial intersection, and it does not add anything to the regular country structure because there aren't any overarching articles about operas set in Scandinavia. But it should become merge to
Category:Operas set in Europe.
Marcocapelle (

Support. All articles are in subcategories, one of which (Finland) isn't even in Scandinavia. Adds an unnecessary layer to the tree - the categories should feed directly into the
Category:Operas set in Europe parent. The films category isn't really an exact parallel, since films are often vague about their exact locale or move between locales (hence several films in that category are not in country-specific categories); opera are predominantly set in one specified place.

Delete. In most cases, it seems like stories/accounts/operas/etc. about vikings are set either in the location that they're raiding (so they're not set in Scandinavia) or take place in a defined original location (so you can specify which country). Stories about non-viking Norsemen are often set in a specific location (and if there's no location, how do you know they're in Scandinavia, rather than Iceland, the
Danelaw, etc.), as are stories of post-viking generations. The only Scandinavian-but-no-country situation I can imagine coming up is the nomadic Lapps whose wanderings historically crossed boundaries all the time, but how often do you hear of operas set among the Lapps?

Comment -- We have recently had a discussion about Iberia, which looks as if it will be closed as "split". Merging everything to Europe should NOT be acceptable as that will apply to probably 90% of them. Hamlet is about a fictional Denmark, but there is also one about the assassination of a Swedish king, alternatively (due to censorship) a governor of Boston.
Peterkingiron (

to be accurate, we are still having at the time of writing
a discussion about Category:Operas in Iberia, which is by no means split - every contribution so far is in favour of merger or deletion. So if we are to use that discussion as as indicator it rather suggests this category can go as well. Operas about Swedish and Danish kings can of course be appropriately categorized under
Category:Operas set in Sweden or
Category:Operas set in Denmark. They are set specifically in those places, not in 'Scandinavia'. --
