Ancient year and decade categories in Greece, Iran, Roman Britain and Spain

The result of the discussion was:merge.
ℯxplicit 02:11, 13 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Nominator's rationale: merge to century categories per country per
WP:SMALLCAT, nearly all these categories have only one article without a reasonable chance of expansion. Note 1: this nomination only concerns countries with few ancient year and decade categories (most articles are in century categories already). For example France, Egypt and China, which currently have more ancient year and decade categories, are yet to follow. Note 2: on the
talk page there is a list of container categories that naturally become empty if this merge is accepted. Though they haven't been tagged, it would be helpful if they are deleted upon closing this discussion.
Marcocapelle (
talk) 08:34, 1 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Merge per nom, but rename "Iran" to "Persia". This needs to be part of a process of renaming all the years/decades/centuries before 1935 (see intro to
Name of Iran) from "Iran" to "Persia", as has already been done in a similar situation for Siam/Thailand. And since we already have "Roman Britain", the Spain categories should be "Roman Spain", or "Hispania", or "Ancient Spain", or something like that.

Nyttend: Is it okay to leave the discussion about renaming to a fresh nomination? Because any of these suggestions would apply to the whole tree of these countries, not just to the oldest categories.
Marcocapelle (
talk) 08:46, 3 June 2017 (UTC)reply
The concern was rather with respect to the "whole" tree of
Category:Centuries in Iran. Anyway it would require the nomination of the target categories, so that is beyond the scope of this nomination.
Marcocapelle (
talk) 11:31, 3 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Upmerge per nom and overally trivial categories resulting in
WP:SMALLCAT, no comment yet on the issue Nyttend brought up regarding Persia vs Iran and other such names, I'll have to look more indebth into it.
Inter&anthro (

SupportNyttend. Persia may be a Latinised Greek name for the place, but that will be how it entered English. I note the language is Farsi, not Irani. I do not think we should allow a modern name for a modern country to dictate how WP names things. Categories were I think moved from Myanmar back to Burma some years ago.
Peterkingiron (

Delete Per nom. And would create category clutter for a non-defining attribute. LugnutsFire Walk with Me 07:04, 1 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Delete. Serving on a jury at Cannes is not a
WP:DEFINING characteristic — it isn't the thing that makes a person notable enough for a Wikipedia article in and of itself, but is an invitation extended to people who were already notable for some other reason (e.g. a film director, an actor, a prominent film critic or historian, an organizer of another film festival, etc.) So each year's festival should certainly list that year's jury members, but there's no strong basis for a category to put everybody who's ever been a Cannes juror together as a group.
Bearcat (
talk) 16:15, 2 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Delete. No individual juror is a jury. See
WP:SETCAT; this is a set category for these juries, not a topic category of everything related to these juries.
Nyttend (
talk) 23:50, 2 June 2017 (UTC)reply
Delete - being a juror is not considered special and not a defining or overly notable accomplishment. If any editor wants to include in the individual articles that the subject was a juror at this film festival that's fine but as a category I think it is inappropriate.
