Under the original system established by Article Two of the U.S. Constitution, electors cast votes for two different candidates for president. The candidate with the highest number of votes became the president, and the second-place candidate became the vice president. There was not a 1788-89 Vice Presidential Election, and this article give the false impression that there was.
