Vashkivtsi ( Ukrainian: Вашківці, romanized: Vaškivci, pronounced [ˈwɑʃkiu̯tsʲi]; Romanian: Vășcăuți; German: Waschkautz; Russian: Вашковцы, romanized: Vaškovcy) is a city in Vyzhnytsia Raion of Chernivtsi Oblast ( province) of Ukraine. It is located in the historical region of Bukovina. It hosts the administration of Vashkivtsi urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. [2] Population: 5,215 (2022 estimate). [1]
One village is administered by the town, Voloka ( Ukrainian: Волока, Romanian: Voloca).
The name of the town comes from the personal name Vas'ko. The first written mention of Vashkivtsi dates back to the 15th century, in the 1430s. [3]
Settlement established in 1903 as Waskoutz am Czeremosz within the Austro-Hungarian Duchy of Bukovina.
In January 1989, the population was 5811 people. [7] [6]
