Second COVID-19 vaccine

Just another heads up to say I had my second COVID-19 vaccine this morning. Unlike last time I haven't escaped without any side effects, so I don't know how much stuff I'll do on here this evening, particularly as we get later into the night. I'll see how it goes though. New timelines

I have just created a Timeline of S4C and was wondering what timelines we could create next. One possibility for television could be Sky One, and a Sky One timeline would include its spin-off channels Sky Replay and Pick TV. Regarding radio, what immediately comes to mind is TalkSport and LBC. What do you think, and can you think of any others? Rillington ( talk) 15:52, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

I did think of an S4C timeline a while ago but wasn't sure how much information there would be, but this looks great. Sky One, LBC and TalkSport sound good. TalkSport began life as TalkRadio so a timeline could include information about that. There's Virgin Radio, although that could end up being too similar to the Absolute Radio timeline, but maybe it would be doable in a few years. Some of the other stations are a bit too recent, but I'd imagine a timeline of Greatest Hits Radio would be a possibility one day, and even a timeline of Boom Radio. It's getting more difficult to think now as most of the subjects seem to be covered. All the major sports are covered now, but a possibility could be Timeline of Olympic coverage on UK television, or Timeline of International sporting events on UK television, such as Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World Cup, etc. Also, what about satellite television? There was BSB for a while, and there's Freesat, and probably others (such as Saorsat in Northern Ireland). Religious programming on radio or television could be another one, or faith-based radio and television channels. There's a few of those, like UCB, Premier Radio and so on. This is Paul ( talk) 17:29, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
I had already began putting together a timeline of multi-sports events and your reply has reminded me to complete it! I've also started to put together a timeline for Sky One and also a timeline for Sky Cinema.
Both have now been created. Rillington ( talk) 14:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
I think a timeline of non Sky movie channels is definitely do-able but I think a religious channels timeline is less realistic as it would mainly just list launches and closures. That said, there's enough content for separate timelines of religious broadcasting for both radio and television.
A timeline of satellite television is definitely a possibility and maybe also a timeline of local television.
Regarding radio, I think that there is already enough information to create a timeline for Greatest Hits Radio as it would include both presenter/on-air changes and each time it launches on a new frequency but it's too soon to create a timeline for stations such as Virgin Radio and Boom Radio. The others of course are TalkSport, which should at least make some reference to Talk Radio, and LBC although both would mostly be presenter changes. Rillington ( talk) 16:59, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
A few other timelines have also come to mind. First, I think there are three for children's broadcasting with separate timelines for BBC, ITV and other channels. There's also enough material for a timeline of schools broadcasting although I think this would be covered in one timeline. I shall look to create these timelines next. Can you think of any other possibities? Rillington ( talk) 15:59, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
And I've now begun putting together all four of these timelines. Rillington ( talk) 14:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
Timeline of Schools Broadcasts in the UK now created and the children's timelines are almost done. Rillington ( talk) 15:07, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
I've been having a think about these for a couple of days and have some other ideas. I hadn't thought of schools and children's broadcasting, but there's a lot of history going right back for both. I'm not sure if I've mentioned any of these before, so forgive me if I have. I'm also not sure how doable some of these are.
  • Timeline of political programming on UK television (covering party political broadcasts, elections, state opening of parliament, PMQs, etc)
  • Timeline of business programming on UK television (such as launch of CNBC, and The Business Programme, The Money Programme, Working Lunch, etc)
  • Timeline of soap operas on UK television (when they began and ended, milestones, etc)
  • Timeline of music programming on UK television (major events that have been broadcast such as Live Aid, The Proms, and the Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert, and programmes like Top of the Pops, The Tube, etc. Major music awards as well like Young Musician of the Year)
  • Timeline of state occasions on UK television (Queen's coronation, royal weddings, presidential visits, and other important events of state)
  • Timeline of daytime television in the UK (when daytime broadcasting began on different television networks, major schedule changes, etc)
  • Timeline of the Open University on television (some of which is covered in the breakfast television timeline)
Hope some of these would be possible. This is Paul ( talk) 15:49, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
I'd actually been thinking that timelines for soap operas and for music programmes as future timeline ideas and would the latter be for programmes, channels or both?
I very much like the idea of a timeline for daytime television as it would sit very well alongside the breakfast television timeline and also maybe one for nighttime/overnight broadcasting.
To an extent political and business programming are covered on the various news timelines but they are still worth considering as timelines in their own right as you could go into more detail about individual programmes, as is one for state occasions which do not really feature in the news timelines. This could also maybe include election results programmes although a timeline for election results programmes could easily be a timeline in its own right but it would almost exclusively cover just the BBC as ITV schedules are not available online. Such a timeline could also include US elections, European elections and local elections.
A timeline for Open University is possible but I'm not sure if there would be enough material if it was confined to television broadcasting, but you could maybe combine it with adult education in general and an OU timeline would probably include radio as well as television. Rillington ( talk) 15:43, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
As for other possibilities, my idea of a local television timeline would not include regional broadcasting as that would be a separate timeline. Local broadcasting would be for local channels and regional broadcasting would be regional news and programming made by the BBC and ITV.
As for other future ideas, I mentioned film channels earlier, maybe one for shopping channels as well? Rillington ( talk) 16:26, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
Have you had any further thoughts about additional radio timelines? One other possibility might be timeline(s) of sports broadcasting on UK radio. This could be one big timeline or it could be separated between the BBC snd commercial stations such as TalkSPORT, local stations, IRN and other sports radio stations. Rillington ( talk) 16:26, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
Some great ideas here. The only radio one I can think of at the moment would be one for Birmingham along the lines of London and Manchester. Possibly also one for Ireland as I don't think we have one at the moment. This is Paul ( talk) 00:05, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
Good idea, as maybe are timelines for radio in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are timelines for television in those countries. Rillington ( talk) 15:43, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

I have nearly completed the three children's tv timelines and am continuing to put together a multi-sports events timeline. I have also started to put together a timeline for local television, which will include local TV from the early cable experiments to today, and am then probably going to compile timelines for radio in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I may then extend this to regions in England for both radio and TV, but they probably won't strict rigidly to the ITV regions. Rillington ( talk) 16:24, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Looking forward to reading them. I’m not at home at the moment, so editing using a different device which makes editing a bit more awkward. I’ll check anything created as soon as I get home, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday. This is Paul ( talk) 23:24, 10 July 2021 (UTC) This is Paul ( talk) 23:24, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

The children's TV timelines are now online. My next timeline will be a timeline of local television. Rillington ( talk) 16:33, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Timelines update

I have now created five more timelines - the three for children's programmes plus a timeline for schools broadcasts and a Timeline of local television in the UK. It's now a question of which are the next timelines that we would create, in addition to a timeline of multi-sports events which I am in the process of creating offline.

Television

Your suggestions included:

  • Timelines for satellite television which might include BSB and Ireland's Soarsat service
  • Timeline of religious programming on radio and/or television could be another one, or faith-based radio and television channels.

As for me, my thoughts include:

  • An election results programmes although such a timeline for election results programmes could easily be a timeline in its own right but it would mostly cover the BBC as ITV schedules are not available online although there is a section about ITV's election coverage within the ITV News article. Such a timeline could, or not include, US elections, European elections and local elections.
  • Timelines of regional broadcasting on the BBC and ITV, probably as separate timelines and also timelines for various regions/counties in England. I think television for specific cities would be unrealistic.
  • Timelines for film channels and one for shopping channels.
  • A timeline for nighttime/overnight broadcasting which would sit well alongside the timeline of breakfast television and any timeline of daytime television.

Radio

Regarding radio, we have both thought about LBC and TalkSport sound good, the latter could include its predecessor TalkRadio. We've also thought about a timeline for Greatest Hits Radio as it would include both presenter/on-air changes and its continued expansion across the UK.

Other suggestions included timeline(s) of sports broadcasting on UK radio. This could be one big timeline or it could be separated between the BBC snd commercial stations such as TalkSPORT, local stations, IRN and other sports radio stations, and timelines for radio in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You also suggested a timeline for radio in Birmingham and maybe we could do timelines for other cities in the UK should there be enough information to create a viable timeline.

Finally, we don't seem to have a timeline for non-RTE radio in Ireland. I think that would be an excellent addition to our timeline series.

What are your thoughts? Rillington ( talk) 15:45, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Some great stuff here that I hadn't thought of. A couple of things that spring to mind:
  • I like the night time television idea as there's a lot that could be covered here, from the early days of ITV going to 24-hour broadcasting to the launch of BBC News 24 and even the overnight bingo stuff like Jackpot247. Although overnight broadcasting wasn't a regular thing before the mid-1980s, I suppose the very first overnight broadcasts were those of election coverage, and I think some Olympic coverage was shown overnight though I'm not certain about that.
  • I think there would be scope on the election timeline to include US elections, as well as the others mentioned, as they do get a lot of coverage on UK TV. I also wondered about referendums, such as the Brexit vote, the original 1975 EEC referendum and those relating to devolution.
  • A timeline of independent radio in Ireland sounds good, there are quite a few commercial stations over there.
  • Radio timelines for other cities should be doable. At a guess Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Nottingham are potential candidates, but there may be others.
Lastly, we probably can't use this as a source for Wikipedia, but I stumbled across this website that gives partial listings for ITV and Channel 4 up to December 1999, as well as the BBC stuff. I recently spent a couple of afternoons looking through old listings and found some stuff I'd forgotten about. This is Paul ( talk) 23:55, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
I've already began creating a timeline of overnight broadcasting, beginning the timeline at the start of the 1980s which is when the first regular post-1am broadcasts took place.
Do you fancy doing the timeline of independent radio in Ireland, as you did most of the other Irish timelines? Rillington ( talk) 15:25, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I'd be glad to do it, although it might take me a week or so to make a start. I'm hoping to get back to doing more TV and radio stuff when there's less of a need to keep the COVID timelines up to date. This is Paul ( talk) 00:27, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

I've also now started a timeline for Greatest Hits Radio. It will include the background as to how it came about by covering the networking of Magic Radio and the subsequent City 2 network, which was the predecessor to GHR. Rillington ( talk) 16:56, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

I have noticed a few entires on the radio timelines about single series programmes - eg two on the Jazz FM timeline - Helen Mayhew begins a three-part series featuring recently-surfaced interviews with Oscar Peterson, Sarah Vaughan and Art Blakey. The material was recorded by journalist Les Tomkins, who died in 2020 and left his archive to the National Jazz Archive and Debut of Space is the Place on Jazz FM, a series of dramas about key moments in the lives of jazz legends, including Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. I don't think that one-off series such as these should really be on the timelines. What do you think? Rillington ( talk) 17:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Daytime television timeline

I have now much of the way through the process of creating the overnight TV timeline and I'm now thinking about any daytime television timelime. What times of day should it cover? What should be the scope of the timeline - ie should it be based solely on developments, as is the case with our other timelines, with only long standing major programmes be mentioned? And also when should the timeline start? My hunch is the start of the 1970s when the restrictions on broadcasting hours were lifted. Rillington ( talk) 16:56, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

The 70s sounds like a good place to begin, and I agree it should follow the other timelines in terms of its content. As regards the time of day it could cover, I'm guessing we go with the time breakfast TV handed over to the regions at 9.25am as a start. An end time is a bit more difficult. Perhaps 6pm or a bit earlier. This is Paul ( talk) 22:32, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
Totally agree re the start time. The end time is trickier. One thought is that daytime ends when the teatime news bulletins begin at 6pm but it could be argued that 5pm to 6pm would be seen as 'teatime' rather than 'daytime'. It's a difficult one to call. Rillington ( talk) 17:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Election results timeline

I've also begun creating that timeline and I have included referendums in this timeline and and I'm inclined also to include USA results programmes as well. What do you think should be covered in an election results timeline? Rillington ( talk) 16:56, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

This sounds good. The US elections always get a lot of coverage so we could include that. The BBC always provides through the night coverage, particularly with the presidential vote, though I think the midterms also get their own programme. I did wonder about by-election coverage as well, but there are so many of those it could make the timeline quite large. This is Paul ( talk) 22:37, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
The 2018 mid-terms did get their own BBC programme - not sure about ITV - and the BBC has historically covered the American Presidential election results although ITV didn't until more recently. Rillington ( talk) 17:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Sky One, Sky Max, Sky Showcase

Hi,

i have run into problems with an article regarding forthcoming channel Sky Max. It has been relegated to draft mode three times on the grounds of all of independent references and even though i have added several, it is still deemed as being not good enough for inclusion on the main site. i have begun a discussion on the Help desk page which summarises all those objections. Any guidance and support would be appreciated as i don't know what else I can do given that the article now contains four independent references.

Also, there is a discussion on Sky One's Talkpage about merging the Sky One and Sky showcase articles based on the incorrect notion that Sky Showcase will replace Sky Max even though Showcase will be a brand new channel with the only replacement aspect being that Showcase will take Sky One's EPG slot. Thankfully, Bonusballs has backed me up on this which has helped hugely as both of us think that all three channels should have their own separate articles.

Bonusballs also made the point that Sky Living should be an article in its own right given that Sky Witness is a different channel and whilst it did 'replace' Sky Living, its programming is somewhat different. I have begun a discussion on Sky Witness's Talkpage about Sky living and Sky Witness having their own separate articles.

Any thoughts, guidance and support on these issues would be appreciated. Rillington ( talk) 14:00, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

I'll keep a look out for some references, but Here's one from the Irish Times that could be usable. I'm not sure what to suggest other than to wait for more sources to appear, which should hopefully happen as the launch gets closer. This is quite a major change for Sky so it should attract some media interest. No doubt Digital Spy will mention it, and someone's bound to review it. This is Paul ( talk) 23:31, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the additional reference and it has been added to the Draft:Sky Max article. My hunch is to let things lie for a short while and resubmit the article in a few weeks to co-inside with its launch. Rillington ( talk) 14:30, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

Timelines

To update you, I have now crested a Timeline of Greatest Hits Radio but have not included presenter changes, not least because it would have further delayed the creation of the timeline. Now that it's online, should we add presenter changes to the timeline?

Elsewhere, my timelines for election broadcasts, overnight television and multi-sport events are continuing to be developed and you said you would be happy to do a timeline for commercial radio in Ireland.

Future timelines that we have talked about include:

Timeline of business programming on UK television (such as launch of CNBC, and The Business Programme, The Money Programme, Working Lunch, etc)

  • Timelines for satellite television which might include BSB and Ireland's Soarsat service
  • Timeline of religious programming on radio and/or television could be another one, or faith-based radio and television channels.
  • Timelines of regional broadcasting on the BBC and ITV, probably as separate timelines and also timelines for various regions/counties in England. I think television for specific cities would be unrealistic.
  • Timelines for film channels and for shopping channels.

This could be one big timeline or it could be separated between the BBC and commercial stations such as TalkSPORT, local stations, IRN and other sports radio stations, and timelines for radio in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You also suggested a few city timeline for radio - Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Nottingham and maybe we could do timelines for other cities in the UK should there be enough information to create a viable timeline. Rillington ( talk) 17:10, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Timeline of Greatest Hits Radio looks great, and works well with the background. I wouldn't have thought of going back so far but it's good to have the background. Yes we could add the presenters as there's a few well known names on there.
The rest of the ideas look good and I look forward to seeing the finished articles. I'll get round to doing the Ireland timeline eventually. I keep hoping the COVID news might slow down but there always seems to be a lot of stuff to add to the timelines. This is Paul ( talk) 23:15, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Dear Paul,

I recently added election boxes on a page you created, Thames Valley PCC. I was wondering if you could check it over.

Hello! I've written an article about Gregory Porter's album (by translating it from ru:Issues of Life: Features and Remixes) and I can not publish it. Can you help me, please? -- Vitamin82 ( talk) 15:47, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

It seems to be ok to me so there shouldn't be a problem with it being moved into the mainspace. I'm not familiar with the draft creation review process though so it might be worth asking someone else to do it. This is Paul ( talk) 16:09, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Timeline of local television in the UK also now created. Rillington ( talk) 18:49, 11 July 2021 (UTC)‎

Regarding radio, we have both thought about LBC and TalkSport sound good, the latter could include its predecessor TalkRadio. Other suggestions included timeline(s) of sports broadcasting on UK radio.
