Hello Tabercil! I noticed that you have uploaded a number of pictures from Luke Ford's website for fair use. How has he provided consent (on his website, through email, etc.)? Also, has he made all of the images on his site available, or have you only been requesting specific pictures? Olessi 02:18, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

• Hello Tabercil, you might have noticed that I transferred some of those pictures to Commons to use them on other wikipedias (mainly German). I've looked at the pictures on Luke's site and see there are quite a lot that could be useful, especially for those Wikipedias that don't allow "fair use" pictures. I thought about uploading some myself.

  But before I do this, I want to propose to use another license tag. Luke asked for attribution to his website. That's not reflected in the tag you are using. But this one meets the requirement. Have a look at it and let me know what you think. Alternatively, one of the Creative Commons licenses could be used, namely cc-by-2.5 ( see here). Regards -- Rosenzweig 21:59, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tabercil. Note that Luke Ford did not say that the photos could be used for any purpose, including commercial uses, or that they could be modified. Hence, your use of {{ copyrighted free use}} is unjustified. Please ask him to license the photos according to the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 license. Okay, traded some more email with Luke. My email to him:

Hey Luke... there's been a snag with your photos on Wikipedia, so I just want to verify your intent when you said I could use them.

They're asking that the photos be released under a Creative Commons license. Essentially the license says:

Attribution. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.

And you wish me to credit lukeisback.com as the source of the photos? Nothing more beyond that needed?

And his full reply to me:

You have my permission to do what you stated (to use my photos). Please just credit lukeisback.com rather than my full name Luke Ford.

So there you have it from the horse's mouth. Now if someone can point out precisely how I should construct the license tag, I'll double-back and fix everything. Tabercil 06:05, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

So could you please reply explicitly saying something closer to what they want to hear?

And his reply, in its entirety:

If that is not good enough, then write what you want me to write to you and I will reply with those exact words.

And I even went one step beyond that. As you may or may not remember, Luke Ford had an earlier website, lukeford dot com. Well I wrote to him about the material that was on that site (accessible through the Wayback Machine), and his answer on that score:

Sure. That's fine with me that you use everything i put on lukeford.com (through aug 8, 2001)... If you want me to write back something to give you permission, just compose it and email it to me. I will email it back in my name.

So I guess it's now open season on Luke Ford's photos. All I need now is for someone to point out precisely how I should craft the license post (preferably by doing one over first) and I'll double back through all my earlier uploads to Wikipedia and change them. Thanks for making it totally clear! I suggest you copy your email exchange with Ford to User:Tabercil/Luke Ford permission, then link to it from all the images. See Image:Selena Silver DSC 0078.JPG for example.

Thank you for your efforts and your patience. I've updated the information on all of the pictures on commons, changed the attribution to "Original Photo from www.lukeisback.com, used with permission (see here)." and the license to cc-by-2.5. Btw, you haven't actually changed the license to cc-by-2.5 for the pictures here. For any specific reason? After all, Luke expressly consented to it :-)

Why haven't I changed the licensing? For one, I wanted to see how to structure it on the page. Thanks to dbenbenn for doing a couple for starts. Another thing, there's a bloody lot of photos there! I've edited all the comments for the photos so they refer to the User:Tabercil/Luke Ford permission page... click on the "What links here" page to see just how many I had to change over. All I can say is thank god for cut'n'paste! Even so, it still took me an hour to go through them all... Tabercil 23:27, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{ GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{ Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the " my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Nope, it's a DVD box cover, and I had placed the source info in the file when I uploaded it. Looks like what happened is back on December 23/05, user K1mm13 deleted the tag info. I'll do a rv on the stuff so it's now present. Tabercil 12:33, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Just wanted to let you know that I've begun uploading the Luke Ford images I am using on the Wikimedia Commons. By uploading to the commons, the images can be used on the other projects as well. Hi, I noticed that you were unsure of Image:Tera mod.jpg and Image:Tpg .jpg as well. However, if you consider them a possible unfree image, you should list them at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images to complete the process.     • De nada. I know you were following the prescribed steps... just letting you know that's I'm full aware of you pulling a bunch of non-fair use pics. Believe me, I was busy on that score based on the earlier erroneous info that it did count as fair-use. Often times for the older stars the DVD cover is the only readily available pic which doesn't have nudity which we can use as arguing "fair use".
