Re: Manual DOI Source?

Thank you for your work with OAbot. I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do, but the answer is that at the moment we do not allow to select from the queue. We'd like to have such a feature but that would need some clarity on the use cases and some change to the backend: phabricator:T173169.

If you want to select some (kind of) DOIs to work on, I can help with some semi-manual work. For context, this is the list of the top suggested DOIs in the suggestion queue (some are actually bad so I'll remove them now):

What I mean is an option to just paste a DOI into the OAbot page and have it find the URL, rather than using it on a wikipedia page. I edit pages that have a DOI and i want to find links without saving the page each time to run it.
Quuux ( talk) 08:08, 22 August 2019 (UTC) reply
That's what Unpaywall and Dissemin are for, OAbot is only a reuser of their data. You can resolve the DOI like this: https://oadoi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2005.08.029 , https://dissem.in/10.1016/j.cell.2005.08.029 . Nemo 09:16, 22 August 2019 (UTC) reply

Disambiguation link notification for September 2

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Chewning Award, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Anderson University ( check to confirm |  fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot ( talk) 08:01, 2 September 2019 (UTC) reply

Please stop making any sort of mass automated change per WP:COSMETICBOT. This didn't seem to actually be a substantive edit.

Actually, no, you should stop a sizeable portion of your edits. Making the changes I'm seeing right now are likely to get people yelling at you (and I'm not happy about 2 of the 3 changes of whitespace-only). E.g. in this edit, it is:
  • More-or-less inappropriate to remove the block spacing in the infobox. I don't have personal issue with it, but it is a) a whitespace-only change and b) likely to get someone else unhappy with you.
  • Stop changing <br> to <br />. Both are valid HTML and wikitext.
  • Stop changing <references /> to {{ reflist}}. That is also valid wikitext and has other benefits as well, namely that it integrates better with VisualEditor.
Please remove those changes from your F+R set. -- Izno ( talk) 05:41, 7 September 2019 (UTC) reply

Nah nah nah. Don't be like that Quuux. Where you went wrong was just not running general fixes but instead making your own thing. For the most part, you can always run general fixes if you make a non-cosmetic change, plus it has the added support of the software and pre-established consensus that those changes are normally okay (again only if they come with non-cosmetic ones). Fixing citation errors is a noble goal, and you should take pride in upholding one of Wikipedia Five pillars through your work (namely WP:Verifiability). Just test your regex patterns out a bunch of times and be cautious you are always making non-cosmetic changes with your cosmetic ones. You'll do great! :D – MJLTalk 04:11, 8 September 2019 (UTC) reply

citation template errors at Circus Maximus

Hello Izno, I'm sending you this in the hope you'll know what to do about it. A bit of a cheek on my part but I saw your name on User talk:Quuux. Hi Quuux, I just noticed a problem with some refs templates at the above article. I've no idea what it is or how to fix it. It seems to have originated with changes you made, way back - [1] and has carried through. I thought it possible that some aspect of the templates you used has been changed since then. I have almost zero capacity (the most dangerous capacity of all!) to deal with templates in any way that doesn't cause ructions or break the Wiki, which is why I avoid using them whenever possible. Could you please help out and fix the problem? Thankee! Haploidavey ( talk) 08:38, 3 May 2021 (UTC) reply
Just in case you're not around (per your contribs list, you might well not be), I'll post a copy of this to User talk:Izno, who confesses gnomishness and might be able or willing to help. Quuux, I guess you're familiar with Wikipedia:Citation templates but even if so, please note the following extract: Because templates can be contentious, editors should not add citation templates, or change an article with a consistent citation format to another, without gaining consensus; see WP:CITECONSENSUS and WP:CITEVAR. You didn't seek consensus for the use of a citation template at Circus Maximus. If you'd asked, I would have objected, for the reasons I've given above.
