Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{ Ctopics/aware}} template.

Please also note that WP:RUSUKR prohibits new editors to edit articles related to Russia-Ukraine conflict, broadly construed. Ymblanter ( talk) 21:51, 4 January 2024 (UTC) reply

Only for requesting specific changes (and discussing these changes), not for general discussions of the political situation. Ymblanter ( talk) 06:32, 5 January 2024 (UTC) reply
Oh okay thanks for telling me! Ymblanter could you remove my comment that needs to be removed I couldn't figure out how to edit out without messing up the talk page. I didn't mean to break the rules. I just was frustrated at the lack of progress made. Monochromemelo1 ( talk) 06:56, 5 January 2024 (UTC) reply
Too late, it has already been replied to. Do not worry, nobody is going to sanction you for one comment like this, but please be careful in the future, Wikipedia (even talk pages) is not Twitter. Ymblanter ( talk) 07:00, 5 January 2024 (UTC) reply
True I will try to be more careful in future discussions. Monochromemelo1 ( talk) 07:08, 5 January 2024 (UTC) reply

This includes Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/April 2024 Chernihiv missile strike‎. As RUSUKR says: non-extended-confirmed editors may not make edits to internal project discussions related to the topic area... Internal project discussions include, but are not limited to, Articles for deletion nominations, WikiProjects, requests for comment, requested moves, and noticeboard discussions..
