American Football Bio Stubs

Thanks for the thoughts on splitting these up. That seems logical, to start by splitting up the players and non-players. Perhaps after that by position might be the "cleanest" split: while many players have played in more than one club, league, or decade, not that many are truly "notable" in several different playing positions (or that's my impression, at least). RE: FLC

Worry not. Just remember that most templates go in talk pages except when they have to do with content disputes (POV, sources, cleanup, AfD and the like). The peer review convention is not so obvious and that's why I didn't make a big deal out of it; after all people learn from their mistakes. I mentioned it, however, because someone was bound to do it sooner or later.

Time is slow in wikiland. As a consequence is an important virtue of editors. Why not work on other articles while you wait for further input on your list? I've found that the wait for important votes on my articles is usually one of my most productive periods!

It took me a while to understand wiki syntax for tables as well. I'd suggest you have a look at Help:Table to learn the basics and a bit more. The class="wikitable" thingy is only used to make tables look pretty, so you still have to format tables manually. For that you can use the "width" parameter and set it to pixels or percentages. I tend to use percentages because that scales better across different screen resolutions. Here is an example:
Header1 Header2 Header3
Text under header 1 Text under header 2 Text under header 3
The markup is the following:
{|class="wikitable" width="80%"
 ! width="40%" | Header1
 ! width="30%" | Header2
 ! width="30%" | Header3
|-
| Text under header 1 || Text under header 2 || Text under header 3
|-
|}
The "width" right after "wikitable" sets the total width of the table relative to screen size (and some other stuff coded into the current wikipedia skin you're using, which you don't have to worry about). The "width" right before each header sets how much of the total width available a column can take. If you "hard set" the width of each column percentages have to add up to 100%.
Also, note how you can declare elements in a row in two different ways, what matters is that you have a "|-" between rows. The "|-" at the end of the last row is optional (I think). Most other parameters you can use (e.g. background and font color and others) are really HTML syntax, so you'll find few references to that on the Wikipedia help pages.
Hope this primer helps. Try to fix the table and let me know if you still have any problems with it. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 20:56, 6 November 2005 (UTC) reply

To be fair, I do not see how it was not necessary for me to compare one world class defender to another. They are always compared to and mentioned for England and in the Premier League, so I was simply placing this in his page.

Comparion to John Terry

They are 2 great defenders and very similar, so I am just comparing their goal ratio.

What is wrong with that?

NPOV

Hi again. The concept of fair is a pov in it's own right - the npov stance is a definite western philosophy. As I said earlier, to be culturally fair means recognising the needs and values of the culture you are connecting to, not trying to replace their cultural values with NPOV ones. How to get round this? Well, from a democratic perspective, which is POV, let them have a choice of whether they want NPOV or pages written according to their culture's perception, expectations etc. Wiki has the capacity to become far greater than what it is, so why not encourage it to grow in a meaningful way? But that's my POV anyway on what NPOV should be. -- Donald 05:36, 6 December 2005 (UTC) reply

In the interests of specificity, I would probably go with using "Class of XXXX" for nongraduates only and not all alumni. This allows the reader to distinguish (or at least infer) who has graduated and who has not. I wouldn't mind seeing nongraduates' reasons for leaving PA, but it could possibly be problematic as that infomration can sometimes ride on rumor more than fact. I can't say with certainty where I first came across Apollo Sunshine. Most likely, I found some of the band's mp3 downloads while browsing betterpropaganda.com, download.com, or a similar website. This was about the time of the release of their self-titled album. Since then I have seen a few ads for them on websites like Pitchfork; they are increasing a bit in popularity. Matt explained this situation best on his talk page, so i'll just copy and paste it here.

In case anyone's interested in this matter, here is a summary: SusanLarson first barges into a dispute and announces that she has sole authority to settle the dispute, suggests that any deviation from her binding "decision" will be taken as vandalism, accuses several editors in good standing of POV-pushing, completely fails to assume good faith, "archives" an increasingly embarrassing — yet still active — discussion that's not going her way, and then rudely and abruptly insists on ending any contact, which will be, er, "construed as harrassment". This is her idea of "ending the matter gracefully", I suppose. Oh well, move along. — Matt Crypto 22:58, 19 January 2006 (UTC) reply

Response to Northern Ireland (transfered from User talk:BBX)

The old government of Northern Ireland flag was never the official flag of Northern Ireland, additionally it was the flag that represented the old Stormount government, which was (in the words of it's first "First Minister"; "A Protestant government, for the Protestant people", a government which oppressed the Nationalist/Republican and Catholic population of Northern Ireland, and therefore is seen as offensive to Nationalists/Republicans and Catholics as it represents oppressions and unjustice. The usage of it in itself shows onsidedness on the part of this "enclyclopedia", but I've noticed that it's the way. Removal of the word "Unofficial" just further shows that the views of Nationalists arne't repected here. Using the term Unofficial shows exactly what the flag is; Unofficial, it never has been the flag of Northern Ireland, and never will be. It has as much right to be there as the Irish Tricolour, yet I don't see anyone putting that up. I'm sure it would be taken down anyway.

The border is relaxed also, there is no border as far as people from Ireland as concerned and I mean ALL the people of Ireland, not just Nationalists and Republicans. Is there any stop points, check points, clearance areas ANYTHING between the six counties and the twenty six counties? No.

I get a lot of anti Irish Nationalist or at least Pro Unionist vibes here, but I'll continue to be correct in what I write and try and give an unbias opinion on the situation and State of northern Ireland, since no one else seems to be willing to do so. I have no doubt that a few people want me blocked from contributing to the northern Ireland article, it wouldn't be the first time an Irish Nationalist has been censored, but I would at least like to find a common ground in giving an unbias view on issues, instead of simply ignoring Nationalst views, common sense and the truth.

Looking back through the article, there is some common ground I can accept. Unofficial is correct, however I won't pursue it anymore. I would however like to add in the section under the "Survery results" pertaining to how northern Ireland people view the situation, as it gives a clear, unbias and informative viewpoint on what exactly northern Ireland people believe. BBX 16:36, 10 February 2006 (UTC) reply

The government was suspended, then collapsed after the Irish Civil rights movement protests began against Catholics being discriminated again by the Unionist government, which Britain turned a blind eye to. Thankfully Nationalists have slowly but surely gained a voice and the days of oppression are virtually over (although issues including jobs, housing and policing still raise a lot of questions). When the so called government went, the flag went to. I understand your point on the border situation, I'll accept your word on that since I believe you're probably only trying to remind unbiased the facts you've been given, but living in the north of Ireland, and living through the "troubles" I know how offense flag is, kinda like flying a Nazi flag in Germany, to the Jews.
Why not find an unbiased flag to represent northern Ireland, perhaps the flag of St. Patrick (the red cross)? I don't know how "high up" you are here, but you do seem to have a lot of stroke, so I believe a healthy discussion between independant observers (i.e. not just Irish Nationalists and Unionists squabbling) might be a good thing. Thanks for your help, hopefully others involved in the subject can be as understanding, but judging by the responsed I've got so far ..... well, I'll hope for the best. Thanks again.

re: You revision on New England Patriots

 • Please only use the rollback to revert vandalism. Because it does not allow edit summaries. Some users have abused the feature to mask their revisions during edit wars.
 • Wikipedia:HiddenStructure basically shows a CSS trick to hide certain text in templates. It enables several table rows to be made "optional"; instead of having the infobox for a particular article filled with a bunch of rows that just list "None", "N/A", or "0", they can be hidden from view instead.
 • Infoboxes on Wikipedia is intended to present a digested summary of common data for a group of articles with a common subject. It is very common for all of the information listed on the infobox to be somewhere in the article text too.

Zzyzx11 (Talk) 23:42, 10 February 2006 (UTC) reply

I think your main misunderstanding was that, although the template data parameter is "nicknames" on Template:NFL team, the caption that shows up on the infobox table row is in fact "Other nicknames". So when you do enter "Nicknames = The Pats", the infobox does display "Other nicknames: The Pats" Zzyzx11 (Talk) 23:49, 10 February 2006 (UTC) reply

Your stand on user boxes...

I tend to agree with much of what you say. I used to have quite a large number of political userboxes on my page which I removed, not so much because of Jimbo's comment but because I decided to make my user page more functional and less of a mini-biography. I still use quite a number - including The Game user box, which you just lost - but except for that one, they all are about projects I'm involved with or my stance on a few Wikipedia policies. I still think that knowing where a user is coming from can help you deduce good faith on some articles, and just didn't think they applied to me, as my focus is on pages like James Joyce and Pink Floyd, and who cares if a Floyd fan is agnostic? And I still haven't been shown an AFD that was completely altered by the use of userboxes or categories to rally those who share your opinions.

I certainly don't think the Wikipedia is going to fall apart over some coloured bits of info on a user page, the danger is in losing good editors or admins through fighting about those coloured bits, and it's a shame that the "Great Purge" and the paedophelia wheel war resulted in just that. Anyway, well-written mini-essay. - dharmabum 00:00, 18 February 2006 (UTC) reply

Haha...thanks for the note about Phillips Academy, I was hoping someone would appreciate Prateek. As far as fencing goes, it's not really interscholastic...yet. There are plans to try and make it so within the next year...though that might or might not happen. Thanks for the de-link, though...it's best to keep in check. Yes...I just created this account. NPOV

PA Alumni Page

In the interests of specificity, I would probably go with using "Class of XXXX" for nongraduates only and not all alumni. This allows the reader to distinguish (or at least infer) who has graduated and who has not. I wouldn't mind seeing nongraduates' reasons for leaving PA, but it could possibly be problematic as that infomration can sometimes ride on rumor more than fact. Apollo Sunshine

I have to admit, I am a huge music nerd. I specifically go out and hunt for new and interesting music; it's probably a bigger hobby for me than Wikipedia. Thanks for your message - it's always nice to hear from people with an interest in somewhat obscure music! Imaginaryoctopus 04:55, 29 December 2005 (UTC) reply

Your entry on my talk

I have updated the issue on my talk. This is the last contact I wish to receive from you on this matter. Continued contacts may be construed as harrassment. Thank you. -- SusanLarson ( User Talk, New talk, Contribs) 17:45, 19 January 2006 (UTC) reply

Suspicious, isn't it, that any criticism or dialogue that isn't going SusanLarson's way is, er, "archived", or that any further contact is "harrassment"!? LOL. Oh well. Given her bizarre behaviour, my only guess is that SusanLarson's feelings on this issue are far from neutral. — Matt Crypto 22:57, 19 January 2006 (UTC) reply

The discussions in question took part on Talk:Dinosaur/archive3 and User talk:SusanLarson.

BBX 18:31, 10 February 2006 (UTC) reply

Just wanted to thank you for your work cleaning up the Charles Whitman article.

You marked this image as being in the public domain because it's the work of the federal government, but I don't think this is correct.
