Multiple AfDs

Hi Iitianeditor. Just some advice that it's probably not the best idea to list 20+ single AfDs at the same time. I have no problem with you nominating any article, it's just that with so many being done at the same time, it can flood the AfD page and make a ton of extra work for those who look at each AfD one by one. Maybe limit the noms to a couple per day, to give enough people enough time to evaluate each one as they are listed. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:19, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply

You're right, I did think of it, but then the pages were very repetitive. If a vandal decides to vandalize 30 pages, should we decide to only review 2 at a time? I wanted to propose speedy deletion, but from what I understood it didn't meet the criteria. Not that I'm saying the pages are in any way like what a vandal would do, it was just a thought experiment. Iitianeditor ( talk) 07:23, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply

All of them meet WP:NCRIC, which isn't "being debated itself", and so all 20 will almost certainly be kept. And why are you specifically picking out bios of Pakistani cricketers? There's nothing that makes Pakistani cricketers less notable, and this would indicate that you may have a bias against them. Joseph 2302 ( talk) 07:41, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
my 2¢ ... I don't appreciate multiple AfD's all done at once with the same deletion script. It indicates there is a bias or a slant at work. I do look at AfD's one by one, and look at pages and history and references. I agree with Lugnuts - it is enough to make people suspicious of you and your motives. -- Whiteguru ( talk) 12:33, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
@ Joseph2302: ICYMI NCRIC doesn't have wide community support and is under discussion at NSPORT where there is clear consensus to remove the criteria under which these players meet it (i.e. domestic appearances). Given that consensus, and recent AfD results, it is actually quite likely that many of these articles will be deleted, particularly those who have played just one or very few FC/LA matches. wjemather please leave a message... 13:13, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
I'm not arguing the notability, I'm saying that an Indian editor nominating 20 Pakistani cricketers (and no cricketers of any other nationality) is suspicious. As is an editor with 3 weeks experienced being so interested in AfDs. As a result, I'm struggling to believe that these nominations were done in good faith and without bias. Joseph 2302 ( talk) 13:22, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Joseph2302, Thanks for assuming stuff about me! Please go ahead and don't evaluate my contributions on their merit, but question my motives. I didn't really want to respond to your incredible insulting idea that because I'm indian I'm nominating them for deletion. But I want you to know that I'm not racist and I'm not sure why you've presumed that to be the case. I spent hours and hours reading about AfDs and even nominated two based on my rudimentary understanding at the start. I waited for those to end to see if I was right. And now you're coming here and saying that I'm racist basically. Incredible.

Notice of discretionary sanctions

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Blocked

You have been blocked for 31 hours for persistent personal attacks and trumped-up charges in this ANI thread, such as accusing Lugnuts of "malicious intentions" and Joseph2303 of calling you a racist (not true, Joseph did no such thing). If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{ unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Bishonen | tålk 09:53, 11 September 2020 (UTC). reply

Bishonen I would say there might be an issue in the way both of us interpret the word "Racist". I would define it as any prejudice towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group. Joseph is right that I'm Indian. Now he claimed, to the best of my understanding, that it's "suspicious" that I'm nominating Pakistani cricketer player's articles for deletion. And that's suspicious because I'm an Indian. He didn't really think of any alternative reasons. ( Valereee has perfectly realized what happened per his comments on Joseph2302's talk page). Now of course I would be very offended by a mischaracterization of me. I'm too tired to list again all the personal attacks Lugnuts had made against me, although a small section of those I've listed on the ani thread. If you look closely, on the comments he has made on my nominations, he absolutely doesn't care about the merit of my nominations. He made a bunch of attacks on me which have been clearly refuted per the ani thread. I believe you've selectively picked out my comment, which I agree could've been phrased better, about Lugnuts malicious intentions. Iitianeditor ( talk) 13:52, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Bishonen, to be fair, Joseph did say that an Indian editor nominating a bunch of Pakistani cricketers was suspicious. It may not be exactly an accusation of racism, but it's sailing pretty close, and I can see how it might feel that way. Iitianeditor, to be fair, you received multiple pieces of advice to slow your roll on AfDs and also to be careful about editing India/Pakistan/Afghanistan topics. The reason Joseph found your edits suspicious is because here on the English Wikipedia we have VAST experience with inexperienced editors from one country or the other wanting to push through what they see as the "correct" point of view. My advice to you is that until you have made several thousand edits, you should stay away from making AfD nominations and stay away from Pakistan. —valereee ( talk) 11:10, 11 September 2020 (UTC) reply
  • Iitianeditor, no admin is going to unblock you based on that request. Did you read the information at Guide to Appealing Blocks that Bishonen linked to above? If not, go read it, then come back here and let's discuss. —valereee ( talk) 14:08, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Valereee I've read it and you're right, I don't think my comments are appropriate for an unblock request. I understand that maybe what was lacking in my request was to show intent to not argue further with other editors over what's already transpired. I guess I wanted more clarification. One concern I had was that if I'm being disruptive and making persistent personal attacks, is Lugnuts not? I believe he has been at least as hurtful to me (if not more) as I've been to him. Can he agree to not accuse me of baseless stuff on multiple pages so that I'm not tempted to respond to him? Iitianeditor ( talk) 14:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
They may have been; I haven't gone over all their interactions with you and don't intend to. This is about you, not them. Okay, so if you haven't done so already, go to Preferences>Gadgets>Navigation popups and enable it. Ping me when you've done that. —valereee ( talk) 14:29, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Valereee I'm using a mobile device and I can't seem to find it on it. I'll quickly fire up my computer to do that. But just a quick clarification, I only meant our interactions on the ani thread since I guess that's where my main violations have occurred. So in my mind, I was just responding to Lugnuts in a similar tone in which he was talking to me. And I wanted to understand where I've gone more wrong than him. Iitianeditor ( talk) 14:35, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Valereee I'm sorry I've been bothering you this much and kinda asking you to make an inordinate amount of effort, the block anyway expires in 2 hours, but what I really wanted to understand was what exactly I've done wrong. Sorry for being a little thick headed. Iitianeditor ( talk) 14:39, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
We'll get to all that. Have you turned on Navigation popups? If so, hover over my name, then hover over Lugnuts' and Joseph's too, above. Tell me what you can learn about each of us. —valereee ( talk) 14:43, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Valereee I've enabled it and see a popup which says actions, user, and popups and gives me brief information about the editor. Iitianeditor ( talk) 14:56, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Great. So you can see that Joseph has tens of thousands of edits over six years and Lugnuts over a million in nearly fifteen years of editing, which means 1. they know a lot about wikipedia policy and 2. the wikipedia community hasn't booted them for being more trouble than they're worth. Now, this doesn't mean even the most experienced editor can't be wrong, but in this case they aren't. I think they could have realized they were talking to a very inexperienced editor and chosen their words better, but commenting on possibly-problematic editing patterns is an okay thing to do, especially at ANI. Joseph probably could have said, "I'm concerned about your editing pattern. When we see a brand-new editor from India AfDing multiple Pakistani articles, that often means the editor is a POV-pusher. Can you explain why you're so focussed on Pakistani cricketers?" And Lugnuts was pointing out another possibly-problematic editing pattern, one that we also often see: sockpuppets often pretend to be new editors, but show high technical competence and discover AfD very early. Because of your lack of experience, you misinterpreted these comments as personal attacks against you. The advice you got at Teahouse to go to ANI was terrible advice to give to an editor with 500 edits. Once you got there, you dug yourself deeper and deeper. No one was ganging up on you anywhere; Wikipedia works collaboratively, which means as many people who want to comment, can. It's just something you have to get comfortable with. Which leads me to reiterate the advice I gave above: slow your roll. Don't nominate any more AfDs until you've !voted correctly (that is, your !vote agrees with the eventual consensus) in at least ten or twenty, and find something to edit besides Pakistan topics until you've got enough experience that you can read back over that ANI and just shake your head and laugh at what a noob you were being. :D —valereee ( talk) 15:20, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Thanks Valereee I feel much better now. That's exactly what I'll do. I'll participate in more discussions before nominating. Would it be fine to participate in my own nominations? Also, would it be fine for me to ask Lugnuts to apologize to me for accusing me (very reasonable considering his experience) without really checking my edit history carefully and accusing me on multiple pages such as https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Saad_Usman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Farooq_Saleem https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Farrukh_Rizvi amongst many more? Iitianeditor ( talk) 15:32, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
You can !vote, but unless you've changed your mind it's not really necessary; the closer knows you support the AfD because you nom'd it.
Lugnuts doesn't have anything to apologize for. They were pointing out a possibly-problematic editing pattern that anyone could recognize. I'd have been just as suspicious as Lugnuts and Joseph. It's quite likely everyone at that ANI or your earliest Teahouse questions is still suspicious, and in fact your talk page already has ten watchers. You can prove those suspicions wrong with the next thousand or so edits you make. You're going to have to trust that I, with my 30K+ edits and fifteen+ years' experience, know what I'm talking about here when I say other editors are free to point out possibly-problematic editing patterns. —valereee ( talk) 15:56, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Valereee Thanks! I trust you and will be following your advice closely. Thanks again for taking out the time to talk to me. I hope it's fine if I contribute despite me saying I don't want to anymore (I've changed my mind). Iitianeditor ( talk) 16:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
It's fine. I'd suggest not rage-quitting again, practically everyone who does that changes their mind and feels a bit sheepish afterward. :) —valereee ( talk) 16:22, 12 September 2020 (UTC) reply
Just to be clear, I thought it was suspicious that 20 Pakistani cricketers were being nominated, as Pakistan topics have had issues in the past (which is why we have discretionary sanctions for India/Pakistan articles). The fact that you're Indian didn't make me more suspicious, if I nominated 20 Pakistani articles for deletion, I'd expect people to ask questions too (and I'm English). Sorry if that wasn't clear when I wrote it. Joseph 2302 ( talk) 11:46, 14 September 2020 (UTC) reply
