City Population Density

My guess is that if we include the "auto" parameter:
population_density_sq_mi = auto

then this line is not needed, thus is why I deleted it from articles:
population_density_km2 =

2010 Census Changes For Cities

I decided to write up a quick article to guide other authors on updating the 2010 Census for city articles in Kansas. This is the approach that I'm going to take for modifying articles. This is considered a live user article, so likely I will change it as I find errors and get feedback. Obviously, everyone can do whatever they want, but hopefully they will take my changes into account. User:Sbmeirow/RecommendedChangesToArticlesFor2010CensusSbmeirowTalk • 02:08, 9 March 2011 (UTC) reply

What you've got so far looks good to me. Three additional items you might consider mentioning: 1) Urban/Metro/CSA population counts in the Infobox, 2) City area data, which affects population density, in the Infobox, and 3) the community demographic breakdown data (race, income, etc.) in the Demographics section. As far as I know, the Census Bureau has not yet released this information for Census 2010. Until it does, there will be a noticeable disjoint between those data points and the updated 2010 population counts. I can see this throwing off some editors and users. My recommendation is that these sections be left as is, with notations where necessary to clarify discrepancies (e.g. city population count is from 2010, but metro area count is from 2009), until the Bureau releases the updated info. At that point, add sections to your template covering how to update these items. FUBAR007 ( talk) 15:24, 14 March 2011 (UTC) reply
Logging in during lunch hour, will respond more tonight. Thanks for reading and your reply. After editing, please remove city name from User:Sbmeirow/ListOfCitiesInKansasToBeEditedFor2010Census so we will know which cities haven't been edited. Thanks. • SbmeirowTalk • 17:58, 14 March 2011 (UTC) reply

Curious, why did you change the reference on "population_footnotes" from http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_PL_GCTPL2.ST13&prodType=table to http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml ?

FactFinder2 is the biggest piece of junk ever, and it isn't easy to find simple stuff like FactFinder1. The link I have been using isn't the best, but at least a person can easily get the population from that link. If I had a better link, I would use it.

I'm not throwing rocks at you, but trying to understand why you changed it. • SbmeirowTalk • 09:31, 19 August 2011 (UTC) reply

The demographic breakdown data I'm pulling for the Demographics section is in a different census report than the one you were citing. It also contains the basic population count, and, to streamline things, I decided to consolidate the census citations into a single reference, cited multiple times, rather than to try and cite each census report individually. A bigger reason is that FactFinder2 is a work in progress and the Census Bureau is periodically updating material and moving some of it around. Linking to the FactFinder2 front page points to the data source without having to contend with that. Also, pointing to the front page of a database is standard WP practice e.g. FactFinder1, GNIS, etc.
I absolutely agree that FactFinder2 is not user-friendly or intuitive at all. But, it is the current official source, and, for better or worse, that's what we have to work with.
The only other thing I'll add is that, the way I see it, our responsibility as WP editors in this regard ends with providing a reference to the source of the data we have used. If that source is poorly organized, that's not our fault or our problem. FUBAR007 ( talk) 13:31, 20 August 2011 (UTC) reply
