Potager du roi

Hello, Doc,

I lived in Versailles for a couple of years, but at the time, the Potager du Roi was rarely open. I don't think I ever visited....

Anyway, I believe you are misinterpreting the WP:Article titles policy. The principal policy is "Article titles are based on how reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject". The Potager du Roi is rarely called anything else in English, though it is often glossed as 'The King's Kitchen Garden', 'The King's Vegetable Garden', 'The King's Garden', or even 'The King's Potager'. It's the same as, say, Notre-Dame de Paris. There is no provision for adding parenthetical translations; parentheses are only used when there is more than one thing with a given name, e.g., Mercury (element).

Best, -- Macrakis ( talk) 14:00, 20 February 2022 (UTC) reply

I am not convinced by your logic. You will note that the only modern book (de Courtois) cited in the references uses both PdR and The King's Vegetable Garden in the title. As for Notre Dame de Paris, that works for English speakers because of the Disney movie and the famous novel. Le PdR is not there yet.

I cite below the operative paragraph from the WP guidelines(note, in particular, the text on greater understanding for the English-speaking reader):

In deciding whether and how to translate a foreign name into English, follow English-language usage. If there is no established English-language treatment for a name, translate it if this can be done without loss of accuracy and with greater understanding for the English-speaking reader.

The number of pageviews for this article is ridiculously low (8 per day over a 90 day period). The Chateau receives millions of visitors every year! I suggest that we keep the title as you have altered it for the time being and take stock again when tourism has picked up in July-August. If pageviews don't increase, then it's clear that we need to change the title.

Marie-José Chombart de Lauwe

Hi there, Dr Dobeaucoup, and thank you for creating Marie-José Chombart de Lauwe. When you base articles on pages from other versions of Wikipedia, for attribution purposes you need to explain it is based on a translation in your first edit (as you did with Jeanne Bohec). It's also useful to include a "translation" template on the talk page. See Help:Translation for more details. I've taken care of this one but you should remember this for future translations. If you intend to write more articles about women, you might like to become a member of WikiProject Women in Red. Happy editing!-- Ipigott ( talk) 08:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC) reply

Thank you, Ipigott. Will do. Just a quick note, though. This is not a straightforward translation. I added some of my own research. Dr Dobeaucoup ( talk) 09:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC) reply
Yes, I realize that - as with most of your other translations. You should however still state that the article contains a translation or perhaps has been inspired by the article in the other language. I hope in any case that you will be creating more articles about women.-- Ipigott ( talk) 14:13, 12 March 2024 (UTC) reply
Ok. Got it! And, yes, I am looking at the Wikiproject Women in Red list. Very useful. Dr Dobeaucoup ( talk) 16:14, 12 March 2024 (UTC) reply
