I suggest that you take a class (or two) in a science-based course. The word "assume" is commonly used to mean "assume the following statement is true for the sake of the following example which may or may not be true." That is definition that I use. As an example, consider the following:
Notice that "assume" here is asking you to assume an obviously incorrect statement. Claiming that the assumption is incorrect or inappropriate is in itself very incorrect and inappropriate. In the end, it comes off as a cheap method to avoid discussing something that you disagree with. -- kainaw ™ 14:54, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion.
Your statement "Assume that the measuring device increases everyone's blood pressure by 10%" is not "obviously incorrect" in the way that "Assume that all people are blue" is obviously incorrect. A sensible reader (with or without your recommended science-based classes) could certainly infer that you present your assumption as an accurate statement. If the assumption is inaccurate, your following statements "We would be comparing those with high blood pressure to those with normal blood pressure - with both values raised 10%. No problem" are of no help to the reader.
In your subsequent statement "if a person's blood pressure is raised abnormally by the measuring device, it is safe to assume that the person reacts similarly to other things", you are not using the word "assume" in the way that you claim above. You are actually using a conditional sentence. The "condition" is "if a person's blood pressure is raised abnormally by the measuring device". The consequence is "it is safe to assume that the person reacts similarly to other things". The consequence that you claim does not follow from the condition.

One thing I left off in my reply at Joe's RfB: one of the more pervasive problems at RfA/RfB is that we tend to care more about the candidates than the voters. That's probably some kind of stupid cave-man instinct telling us that chiefs are more important than grunts. I don't want to give the impression that I think we want to watch how we respond to opposes just because it might help the candidate; it's just as important to actually do something about issues the opposers bring up. So ... thanks for your comment, and in my own CSD work, I'll try to be careful with A3's in particular and with giving the creators more time in general. I bet you haven't seen this in Units accepted for use with SI:
1 mbar = 1 hPa = 100 Pa (was used in atmospheric meteorology, the preferred unit is now the hectopascal)
I also prefer unit multipliers in multiples of 10^3, so I agree with your edit. It just jogged my memory as I'd used that page to explain to the previous poster what our preferred units were (and thought then that any preference for hPa was a bit odd). -- RexxS ( talk) 21:03, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs ( talk) 17:05, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
