Guild of Copy Editors September 2023 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the September 2023 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since June. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. David Thomsen: Prolific Wikipedian and Guild member David Thomsen ( Dthomsen8) died in November 2022. He was a regular copy editor who took part in many of our Drives and Blitzes. An obituary was published in the mid-July issue of The Signpost. Tributes can be left on David's talk page. Election news: In our mid-year Election of Coordinators, Dhtwiki was chosen as lead coordinator, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo continue as assistant coordinators, and Baffle gab1978 stepped down from the role. If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself! The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you'd like to help out, you may nominate yourself or any suitable editor—with their permission—for the Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2024. Nominations will close at 23:59 on 15 December (UTC). Voting begins immediately after the close of nominations and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under current sanctions) are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on 30 June. The article Cecilia Gentili, it's very confusing when birth sex is omitted. The text reads, "she was raped"; that implies a girl was raped when in actual fact it was a boy who was raped. Is it really standard on here to omit such detail? Reading that article I had no idea whether Cecilia was a lesbian or a transwoman and only discovered which by clicking on the NBC reference which states "assigned male at birth". Surely this encyclopedia should be as clear as a reference? "She came out as gay", which implies lesbian, which again is inaccurate as she was a boy at that stage. Say a priest sexually abused young boys (which sadly was often the case), but one of the boys transitioned, do we say "the priest sexually abused a girl"? That would be misleading and perhaps even dangerous by not recording the crime committed. It's about accuracy whilst also respecting the person's identity, for while she became a woman she was a boy at birth. Carlo Sensini ( talk) 18:08, 8 February 2024 (UTC) reply

I totally get where you're coming from! I just understood her to be a trans woman because it says later in the text that she came out as trans. I also think that the place you put 'Assigned male at birth' could perhaps be changed if you really feel the need to include it, because placing it right at the start of her early life section feels like a bit of undue focus. Perhaps making it clearer that she's a trans woman would help? Wikipedia is mead to present information that has no particular point of view. Also, I don't particularly think your priest comparison works here, because we are not making a case for her rapist to be in jail. We're explaining part of the motivation for her activism. The fact she was raped while presenting as a boy had little importance here. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Gender Identity for more about the way we handle gender identity and trans people. Yeah I read further down and it does say transgender, but even still we had to wade through a paragraph of confusion before we get to that part. I'd have thought it would be best to clarify from the start of the early life section, that way we can understand that yes, she now identifies as a woman, but she was raped while a boy; saying "she was raped" is fine, but in the knowledge she was born male. I felt the need to click on that NBC reference just to be sure of her status (and it does clarify matters immediately). I mentioned the priest for the purpose of clarity, as although there was no criminal case it is still a serious issue, thus recording it as a crime against a boy.
