{{ helpme}} I am trying to verify the identity of a user on wikipedia that made liable comments about me. I know who the person is because I have traced thier username to a very small business website that they operate,as well as they have repeatedly spammed another local wikipedia page soliciting their business, but I need a conclusve identity for a civil suit that I am launching. I also have a police investigation in progress in relation to harassment and the person of interest to the police is probably the same one that posted this info. I assume I can obtain a subpoena to gather the information I need, but want to know if anyone could give me the immediate information I need without obtaining a subpoena? The user in question goes by the name "Rundnc" and wikipedia has blocked their account for vandalism at this time.

I would like to ask an administrator how to request this page be protected? I find that the subject who is my elderly father, is under attack from a stalker who resides in Dunwoody, Ga. I have a hate crime complaint with the Atlanta FBI in progress due to other incidents in the past, as well as I am a witness for the local Dekalb County property tax division in regards to an investigation they have against the man in question and his wife.

Thank you for your help, Charles Trippi, Jr

Your request

Hi,

I noticed your request for information on a blocked contributor to Wikipedia.

As a rule, Wikipedia is tightly bound by the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy. In general, no information is ever released outside those guidelines. To underpin that, even the administrators themselves are not allowed to know more information on identity than you yourself can see -- this is restricted to a very small group of editors who can look behind a username to an IP address, and these operate under a tight code of mutual cross-checking and would be instantly stripped of such rights for even hinting about detailed location or other information they could tell from an IP, if it contravened that policy.

Part of the reason for this is that Wikipedia is accessed, and edited, by a wide range of users, often in countries where the laws are not as generous towards free speech as one might expect here. As a rule, vandalism, including defamatory or unpleasant comments, is handled by the editorial community, which deals with such cases as a matter of routine, and removal is all that's needed - the matter is gone and anything nasty is gone with it. Details of pages that might be useful or relevant to you on this are below.

Resources
  • Foundation privacy policy - applies above all
  • Biography of Living People policy - unlikely to apply but may be useful as reference
  • Dispute resolution -- how disputes are handled between editors.
  • Vandalism policy and blocking policy
  • Administrator's noticeboard for Incidents - for speedy admin response to an incident. Do not overuse, but worth knowing it's there for legitimate appropriate need.
  • Oversight - for genuine breaches of privacy and the like, in some cases a revision can be deleted completely.
  • OTRS - contacting the Foundation ticket service via OTRS. They are less likely to be able to help, since this would usually be considered an editorial issue, but all emails are taken seriously and if you decided to take it further they would be your contact outside the editorial community.
  • Wikipedia's policy on actual legal threats - broadly an editor who actually says "I will sue you" or "I will take legal action" in a manner that is a cogent threat to do so, should not edit until the matter is resolved or withdrawn. Worth ensuring you know about to avoid problems, given the obvious feelings.

Hopefully one or some of these will help. You've probably come across many of them already here and there. If you need to know more or want further advice on handling, please do ask.

Yours,

I received the proper identifying information of the user in question from Wikipedia legal this week through the issuance of a subpeona. I am now preparing a civil suit against this person.

Thanks to everyone who offered assistance in this matter.

Another update: The person who posted this material about our family also was charged by the local police with: "Distributing Obscene Material" in relation to soliciting phone sex on one of our cell phone numbers. Between this and pending suits, this idiot will be in court for a long time. Trippi ( talk) 23:04, 12 October 2009 (UTC) reply

For anyone who is attacked on wikipedia, there are simple ways to find the parasite that commits the act. In my case, it was a guy who is a real loser. The local police stormed his home last fall for other criminal acts and he will be facing a judge soon enough! Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I've noticed that you have been adding your signature to some of your article contributions. This is a simple mistake to make and is easy to correct. For future reference, the need to associate edits with users is taken care of by an article's edit history. Therefore, you should use your signature only when contributing to talk pages, the Village Pump, or other such discussion pages. For a better understanding of what distinguishes articles from these type of pages, please see What is an article?. Again, thank you for contributing, and enjoy your Wikipedia experience! Thank you. -- Rrburke( talk) 15:20, 17 November 2009 (UTC) reply

We find that the Charley Trippi page is once again under vandalism attack by a very sick individual. The Dunwoody, Ga & Athens, Ga police believe it is the same stalker who was vandalizing the page before. Subpoenas have been sent out and we are awaiting once again to see if the police arrest the man who was charged in the last incident. Trippi ( talk) 03:29, 11 February 2012 (UTC) reply
