By definition Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things . Spirituality has grown over time and has expanded to multiple practices and religious beliefs . Spirituality incorporates the physical realm as well as the spiritual one . It has become a very mainstream topic as of recent . Through the Wikipedia page we found that Modern Spirituality is a mix of Christian beliefs along with Western esoteric traditions and elements of Asian and Indian religions .The term was found familiar with Christianity as it referenced the " Holy Spirit ". Spirituality in itself has to do with the spiritual realm and what you believe to happen to you in the afterlife .There are different types of spirituality you may identify with including ascetical, mystical, active-practical, and prophetic-practical.

When entering medical school one of the biggest topics that are talked about is respect for patients’ beliefs and their own proper medical autonomy Is it proper to disregard someone’s beliefs if it saves their lives ? Physicians in previous decades were trained to diagnose and treat disease and had no particular training on how to deal with a patient’s spiritual beliefs . Many professionals have described that it is important to respect a patient’s beliefs especially if the patient is known to reluctant to treatment and or medical examination . Ethically speaking it is the only route that will keep the hospital from getting a law suite Each physician must learn to respect multiple kinds of religions and how it can impact their treatment plan within the hospital . Many religious affiliations have different beliefs towards how they would go about medical treatment . Johavas Witness are well known to refuse blood transfusion , in the case of an emergency some patients are in need of blood transfusion . But if the patient refuses doctors cannot go against the patients wishes . They are many laws set in place in different states that indicates what do in these kinds of scenarios . Patient autonomy is one of the biggest topics talked about during your medical training as every patient has a right to free will . Physicians must respect the patient’s wishes even if its against what they think is best because Spirituality is a big part of free will , as in America we are free to practice whatever religion we like . If doctors were to violate the patient’s wishes in essence it would be dishonoring the first amendment which is Freedom of Speech , the Freedom of press and Freedom to Religion .

Many hospitals are implementing spiritual practice within their treatment . In Stanford hospital , they created spiritual groups that are well practiced in multiple religions and go to patients’ rooms to pray with them before a big surgery . In their services they offer open conversation of hope , prayer , and a chance to connect with your spiritual Traditions . This new approach allows patients to feel more grounded and more like people when dealing with severe illness . A perspective of many is that they feel unheard and almost treated like a body in hospitals . What Sandford hopes to accomplish is a more wholesome and peaceful environment for patients to feel comfortable in . With this philosophy it allows patients to feel secure and almost protected by their spiritual purpose .

From the outside of the United States , different medical practices in different cultures have added a new philosophy involving medicine and spirituality .Sufi healers of Africa and Asia who can also be found in the Uk , are fundamentally mystics. Their medical work is seen as a process assisting them and their patients on their spiritual journeys. Sufi healers in fact go under training and even go to school or university to practice it . Much of their spiritual practice involves healing of the soul that essentially heals the body . They learn how to heal the body , heart and soul , from the divine light of Allah . Allah in Arabic stands for God . Sufi healers are mostly found in Africa and Asia . North American and European Healers are not far off from the Sufi healers, but they do differ in ways as they work more with herbal concoctions, ointments and oils .This can be found as a form of pharmacopoeia. Pharmacopoeia essentially is a published book that would list multiple medications and what they would do . This particular book in ancient times belonged to healers . There is also a form of Spiritual healing , which essentially is healing with paranormal beings .
