Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to 820 Fifth Avenue may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of John Jones (collector), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/j/john-jones/.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) Welcome

Hi, welcome to Wikipedia, and sorry that this may seem like a rude way to say hello.

You will see that I have deleted the article John Jones (collector). It is very possible that we should have an article on this person, and I hope you will try again.

However, there were two, related problems with the article.

The first is that you started the article by simply copy and pasting material from a copyrighted site. While you then made changes, the original is in the history and still constitutes a copyright violation. That problem can be fixed, as I can remove the visibility of prior versions, but this would be a repair, and we would prefer that editors not start an article this way.

It is not, in general, good practice to start writing an article by using copyrighted material as a starting point. The reason is that simply changing some of the words leaves the original structure of the copyrighted material, and the results, even with many words changed, may constitute a copyright violation. Wikipedia deliberately takes a conservative view toward copyright; we want to be sure that we do not have close calls. Changing words means it is no longer a simple copy paste, but it can still qualify as a Close paraphrase, which is still a problem.

When I look at the source, and the current state of the article, it is clear that the current article was written by modifying a few words in the source.

A better practice is to identify more than one reliable source about the subject, read each of the articles, then start writing the article in your own words. Then check against the sources, in case you accidentally remembered long phrases from the source, and make sure those are rewritten.

I hope you will try again, and I hope you will check out the first message from Sarah the Teahouse is a great place to ask questions.-- S Philbrick (Talk) 13:21, 17 June 2014 (UTC) reply
