Defining "No origin"

Since you tagged an image ( File:Kirk douglas photo signed.JPG) with one of your rationales being that it had "no origin," I'm not sure what you mean, since the author and source were noted. I've never seen this term used on an image tag, and prefer to know, before uploading other files.-- Wikiwatcher1 ( talk) 17:15, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

You seem to have understood the definition well enough to make a reply here. We hope ( talk) 17:23, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
I assumed you were referring to the author, but I'm still not sure, since it's vague. "Author" and "source" are required and clear. "No origin" is ambiguous. Can you clarify? -- Wikiwatcher1 ( talk) 17:41, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

You were conversant with it enough to reply there. We hope ( talk) 17:48, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Are you implying that your "no origin" rationale was self-created and meant to be ambiguous? If it was, maybe you can simply strike it out or clarify it, rather than confuse the issue.-- Wikiwatcher1 ( talk) 17:56, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Possible erroneous deletion

Once again, I came across another image deleted after you tagged it but was never notified. The DR was for :File:Huston-46.jpg, and besides not having a chance to reply, the rationale strikes me as weak at best. You claimed that a webzine, founded in 2007, and which includes a boilerplate 2012 copyright notice on all its pages, owned the copyright to this 1940s photo. In fact the photo has been used numerous times, including the cover of Huston's biography in 2004. The image that magazine used probably came from WP.

You continually search for, find and tag photos used by websites simply because they use a 70-year-old PD images on their pages with a boilerplate copyright notice. I have discussed this issue with you many times before, that a web page notice is meant to protect the web page design only, not ancient photos they buy or simply cut and paste onto it. I'm kindly requesting that you try to undelete the image and to notify me, as uploader, in the future, as you recommend others do. Thanks. -- Wikiwatcher1 ( talk) 03:28, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Song of the Open Road

Great news. My copy was delivered this morning, and I've made a start on it this afternoon with the first few chapters. I've just got to the point where Jo has returned to California following the New York episode with 'Sir Hubert' (the sponsor who didn't like The Pied Pipers) and receives a call from Tommy Dorsey in Chicago. Lots of interesting stuff in there. The book is split into three sections; an autobiography written by Paul and Jo in 1979, some personal correspondences between them from 1945, and some essays written by Paul while he was at Capitol. The bio includes quite a large chapter on Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, so there might be enough for an article. Have also discovered earlier plans for an autobiography which didn't take off because publishers wanted it to be a tell-all book, something not favoured by the authors. I plan to read it over the next few days, so will make notes on anything we don't currently have as I go along. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 18:37, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

I'll let you know if I find anything. One thing I'm learning from reading the book is how modest they both were about their influence. In his foreword Tim Weston says that growing up he did not realise the extent to which his parents had been famous back in the day. Could be one or two quotes we can use somewhere. Also, agree with you on the tell-all thing. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 14:34, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
I guess there were a few in show-business who could be awkward like that (I know Alfred Hitchcock made things difficult for Tippi Hedren when she didn't want to star in any more of his films, for example). I think it's definitely worth mentioning this if we haven't already. Pity about the Cupid picture. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 16:25, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Sounds interesting. I just found the lyrics, and a short sample on Amazon. I looked for it on YouTube too, as there's lots of Sinatra stuff on there, but I suspect if the song is as awful as the clip I heard nobody's been brave enough to upload it. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 17:19, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. I have to nip out for a couple of hours shortly, but will take a look at it when I get back. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 17:21, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Back again now so I'll read the interview next. I actually saw that edit yesterday and checked out the page, but 196 is a list of supplementary notes, none of which mentions the Republican Party. I see she sang at the White House, but as you say that doesn't affiliate her to any political party. A few years ago Tony Blair used to invite musicians to Downing Street, but I'm not sure how many of them actually supported his party. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 19:57, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

That's a great interview (and with some useful stuff about the beginnings of Corinthian). I definitely think there's enough to start a Corinthian article, and also to expand the section on her later life, re helping Tim with Corinthian, and maybe some of her thoughts on the music industry. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 21:01, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
That would be very useful. They'd all be in one place and easier to access, I guess. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 21:17, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
At least the politics thing's sorted out now. :) Thanks for the links, by the way. I was going to ask you about the New Yorker article, so I'm glad you had that one. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:22, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Jo Stafford peer review

Hi, I've listed Jo Stafford for peer review to get some thoughts on what might need to be done for a future GA nomination. Hopefully we'll get some useful feedback from it. I'm fairly up to date with most of the things on my current to do list, so should be able to work on any issues that crop up. I have a GA currently outstanding, but it shouldn't need more than a couple of hours work to pass so if I do need to go back to it I won't be away for long. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 14:11, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Both look like great pics to use for the article. Must confess I'm not sure how things stand with UK copyright law, though I've seen photos from other shows uploaded so it must be possible. Glad to hear your computer got fixed. It's always a pain when they decide to go wrong. I had one crash on me a couple of years ago and ended up having to take it back to the store for them to look at it. Turned out the hard drive had somehow become dislodged, but I'm not sure how it happened. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 16:40, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
The Bob Hope picture definitely adds to the TV show article. Also I like the Avakian photo, which should be useful for a Jonathan and Darlene page. You have a good point about the hard drive, but as you say proving it is something else. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:53, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi again. I've just had an attempt at expanding the lead. I think I've included all the main points, but let me know if I've missed anything. Also, please excuse any British spelling. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 19:31, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm still waiting for some peer review comments, but sadly no takers yet. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 20:01, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
Some good refs there, and I like the song. I'd be interested to hear the other Red Ingles track if you find it anywhere online. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:17, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi again, I got some feedback from the peer review on Jo's article so I've spent the day working on it. The comments were fairly positive with most of the suggestions concerned with a bit of fine tuning. I've done the majority of them, but there were a couple I wasn't sure about so I've left them for the time being. At some point I'll move the singles and albums to a separate discography, but need to check out a few others where that's been done. I'm signing off for the night shortly as it's approaching midnight here, but if you get a chance to read through it before tomorrow let me know what you think, and if you can help with anything I've left that would be great. Cheers Paul MacDermott ( talk) 23:55, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the info re the Dorsey situation. Can reply now I've dealt with the tricky situation involving a minor British celeb. I've addressed a lot of the stuff at the peer review, but there were a couple of things I wasn't sure about; the stuff with Sir Hubert being one of them, and a sentence in the section dealing with the Edwardses which I thought might be a quote. I think there was a couple of other things too, but can't remember off-hand without reading through it again. I was wondering if you had any more sources for the Sir Hubert story that go into more detail about it? The book's quite patchy on who fired them, only saying that Sir Hubert blew his top after watching them perform a novelty song. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 21:24, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Ah yes, that was the quote. I think those pesky anon ips have been up to no good again. :) I'll take it out. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:02, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Found it. To be honest I wasn't sure what was confusing about the story. It would be natural for someone to be embarrassed in that situation. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:15, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

"Involved" images

I'm ready, send em at me. —  Crisco 1492 ( talk) 15:40, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I see the problem with it. I did wonder about splitting the article into two and creating something like List of Jo Stafford compilation albums (1955-2000) and List of Jo Stafford compilation albums (2000-present). Not sure if that would be more manageable. I think you're right about the Capitol Collectors series and the other album. I'll restore the first one and create an entry for the second. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 16:08, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

ok, have split List of Jo Stafford compilation albums into three: List of Jo Stafford compilation albums (1955–1999), List of Jo Stafford compilation albums (2000–2009) and List of Jo Stafford compilation albums (2010–present). 2000–present had 50 entries which I thought might still be too many, but hopefully now they'll be easier to maintain. Also restored the Capitol Collectors Series. Can you help with the Allmusic rating? Paul MacDermott ( talk) 17:09, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
Cheers for that. I'll create the portrait album shortly. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 17:29, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
Have both of them done now. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 18:33, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Re:WebCite

I had a problem with McAfee for a while. Whenever I tried to access WebCite through Google Chrome it would take me to the page that says "Whoa! Are you sure you want to go there?" so I ended up having to ignore it. Also had a strange experience the other day where WebCite didn't seem to want to archive something properly (odd as I'd submitted several pages successfully that day). Not sure what was happening there. I don't have an email account with gmail, so can't really help with that one, but I also seem to get a lot of spam from various obscure places. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 12:13, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

I see what you mean by an addy now. I thought it was something through gmail, but if I've got this right it's generated by whichever browser you use with WebCite. With McAfee there was an option to override the virus warning for the site, so I'm guessing there could be a similar facility with Avast AV. Not sure how to stop the spam though. For some reason I've never been able to actually archive with Chrome, even though I use it as my main browser. I've just tried it through IE (my usual browser for WebCite tasks) and it seems to be working fine. I picked a random article from today's events from Cycling News which seems to have archived successfully here, but the Rugby Observer story I tried to submit the other day still doesn't seem to work as I get directed to an error page. My guess is that it could be something to do with the Rugby Observer site or WebCite itself being unable to recognise something. As there seem to be other problems it could be the latter. I wonder if it's worth asking WP:HELPDESK or WP:VTP about this as there must be a way to contact the site, and perhaps someone there might have an address. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 15:05, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Looks like I was on the right track with my first guess. :) If a hacker has grabbed a stack of email addresses then I guess I can expect an increase in dodgy correspondences. Most of what I've received up to now seem to be people asking for my bank details so I can inherit untold wealth from long-lost relatives, or look after several millions from a Nigeria bank and take a ten percent share. :) Maybe I'll have to look into changing my email address. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 17:20, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I've been using my home email address for WebCite, so hopefully someone at the helpdesk will know how to contact them. I'm with BT who are generally quite good at dealing with spam. Suspicious emails tend to go straight to the spam box, or if they don't you can mark them as spam and any future correspondence from the same address goes straight there. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 18:10, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
This page may help as there's some contact details on it. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 18:20, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll get in touch with them and forward everything on. Paul MacDermott ( talk) 18:31, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Email sounds good. Hopefully they should be able to fix it. Incidentally, how did you delete the add-on? Was it a case of just creating a new bookmarklet? Paul MacDermott ( talk) 19:00, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
ok, have a nice new hotmail account now which I'll use for WebCite, Wikipedia, etc. :) Happy to say I've never opened a dodgy email attachment. Unless it's a file I'm expecting from someone I know or a trusted source like Amazon I ignore them. BT seems to delete spam emails periodically, although I don't know if they investigate them. I'll definitely forward any more I get onto them though. Cheers Paul MacDermott ( talk) 22:10, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

More photos of George Nader

I wonder if I can upload these photos: [1], [2], [3]. I did search "Visual Materials" under ' Universal Pictures' in the Copyright Catalog; no renewals of these photos were found. Even if motion pictures for whom pictures were used are still copyrighted, I no longer treat these images the same as films. Thoughts? -- George Ho ( talk) 21:27, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

I'd try to find out what the names of the 2 1956 films are and have a look first. Man Afraid was renewed:
Type of Work: Motion Picture
Registration Number / Date: RE0000237090 / 1985-02-19
Renewal registration for: LP0000008136 / 1957-02-24
Title: Man afraid; motion picture. By Universal Pictures Company, Inc.
Copyright Claimant: Universal City Studios, Inc. (PWH)
Variant title: Man afraid
This looks like it wasn't part of the film but was taken during a break, so it might be a separate publicity photo they didn't renew. I'd get a few more opinions on them at Commons' copyright desk before uploading them, though. BTW, I always keep my eyes open for George Nader photos and do upload them at Commons if/when I find any. :) We hope ( talk) 22:04, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Ones taken by King Features are not renewed. I've checked, and no renewal registrations have been found. I've already uploaded File:George Nader November 1956.jpg months ago from one of items. You can do other two. -- George Ho ( talk) 22:23, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a bit of a xomplex things to do. Thanks for taking care of it. :) Paul MacDermott ( talk) 19:12, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
