Hi Ram-Man, I've prepared the Perl script we discussed at the pump. It produces 5 files: Shortest/Longest/Orphaned/Most referenced/Most wanted articles, each as html file and as a text file in wiki format.
The script runs in 5 minutes on my 1.2 GHz machine. I tested it on an old SQL dump.
Be sure to use Perl 5.8 (I use ActivePerl). I spent days optimizing my TomeRaider and Statistics scripts (see here) only to find out that Perl 5.6. has some very huge memory leaks.
You run the script as follows "perl WikiSpecial.pl -i input folder -o output folder -d date of dump as yyyymmdd -l two letter language code: en"
If you add -t the script looks for cur_table_en.sql instead of cur_table.sql
Feedback is appreciated, Cheers Erik Zachte 21:52, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Why are you adding ITIS links in the taxoboxes of fishes? They might be useful in a references section, but even where the taxobox currently follows them it may not in the future, and they don't provide any additional information. -- Josh
Because a long time ago I was working on some flowers and I copied the idea from some that I was looking at. I suppose they could be placed in a references section, but I've found that they are pretty small and concise in the taxobox and they only really relate to the taxobox anyway, not the rest of the article. Someone at a glance can see the TSN (Taxonomic Serial Number), so it is not simply a reference but something giving information. In addition, the external link shows a bunch of additional references specific to that information in the taxobox. If there is a consensus one way or another it can be changed. -- Ram-Man 12:02, Apr 29, 2004 (UTC)
The TSN does not give additional taxonomic information, because they don't have currency outside of ITIS, and aren't more stable than group names. I thought there was a concensus not to use them, since they're simply promoting one external resource, but that might have just been my personal preference. -- Josh
I don't think it is such an issue. But thanks, for this and the other stuff you've been doing. -- Josh

Hi, I was thinking about writing a bot to place all the US-census small town and county articles into approriate categories. However, in the process of figuring out how to write and authorise a new bot, I came to relise that it would actually be better and safer to get the original Ram-bot to do it.
I'll be up-front and say that part of my motivation here is the hope that one day the special:random page link will become user customisable so that you could exclude or include specific heirarchies of categories.

Ram-Man,
I see from your user page that you are interested in working on Pennsylvania geography.
I have a puzzle for you: an unexpected gap in PA town names, specifically, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
While copy editing USA 3000 Airlines, I discovered a true oddity on Wikipedia: a link to a U.S. town that doesn't appear to have an article, namely, Newtown Square, PA. I was under the impression that articles had been written for all U.S. populated places, based on 2000 census data.
My first instinct was that it was a typo, so I checked the USA 3000 company website, but the contact information there does indeed list their mailing address as being spelled Newtown Square, PA, and it even has a zip code: 19073. I checked the USPS.com zip code lookup, and sure enough, it's legit for Newtown Square, PA. So why no article? Is it possibly listed under some other name? Did it maybe get missed in the Census 2000 data dump?
Whatever the case, I really don't know much about Pennsylvania, having only passed through on a couple of occasions, so I really don't know enough to tackle this article. I'd lke to turn the mystery over to someone who has a better working knowledge of PA geography.
If you're not able or interested in tackling this probem, could you point me to someone who is?
Thanks!

Hello, do you think you could tailor your Rambot to add articles on cities and towns in Canada? Denelson83 08:23, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

If we have more recent and accurate data, IMHO we should use it. :) -- Seth Ilys 02:22, 5 May 2004 (UTC)
Rambot does such a good job that at first I thought the articles were written by a person. I suggest that in the header of the article a comment be placed such as "This is a bot generated Wikipedia entry. Further additions by a human Wikipedian are solicited and encouraged. Please edit out this comment when this article is improved.", or something like it. The idea is to let it be known that these bot generated articles are really stubs, albeit very nice stubs, that need fleshing out. Kd4ttc 00:43, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
Could you make rambot assign categories to its articles automatically, like Category:Villages in Nebraska for Ithaca, Nebraska, Category:Tennessee counties for Marshall County, Tennessee etc? Hi. I ran into a mathematical impossibility in the Lima, Oklahoma article. It states:
This adds up to 110.4%, obviously wrong. I belive these numbers mean that out of the number of people in that age group, the given percentage is below the poverty level. (See [2]) I think this needs to be rephrased. Is this change something that Ram-bot can update? Thanks. -- ChrisRuvolo 07:44, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Just thought to drop a note that if your bot creates any geography related stubs, it should use geo-stub. I've created that stub for that purpose, so tracking down geographical related stubs is easier. - Allyunion 23:22, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Hi, I am currently building and testing an automated Wikipedia link suggester. For the RamBot articles, I thought it would be much better to tell you once now what the suggestions would be, rather than save thousands of identical suggestions onto the talk pages of RamBot articles (which would basically be like spamming).
So, using Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania as an example, here are the results of running it on this article:
These three turned up in most or all or the RamBot articles. (The first two suggestions are kind of sucky, but the poverty line one is alright). Additional to these were the following, which occurred in a much smaller subset of the articles, which I'm presuming are also RamBot articles:
To avoid the problems and annoyance that would ensure from making these suggestions over and over, I've added these six word combinations to the list of "bad links", so that these things won't be suggested any more. All the best, Nickj 07:40, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I added some stuff to east hampton, NY... and now it's all gone. What happened?

- I rememember seeing something when I first came on board about the geographical site names being first done by robot, using some(?) almanac. Someone please bring me up to speed on this; I don't know where to find the information. A lot of place names were missed. Is there any way to find the information for these place names - and obtain it without retyping? There are some that I'd like to work on, but it would be nice to have a similar format for all. Can you still remember what was the reason for it? Or was it more accidentally that all township were removed? andy 21:40, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Oh and lastly about the 6 transactions per minute. When the rambot first started working before Wikipedia:Bots even existed there were a lot of server troubles and people were complaining about lag, but it turned out that the bot had nothing to do with it (developers of the system verified this, but people clung to their false perceptions). Nevertheless, when I was working on the Bots page, one of the requirements I made of a bot was to not be a server hog, which later developed into a transaction guideline. Nevertheless restricting the rambot simply causes an annoying delay that is all about rules and not about the spirit behind those rules. It violates none of harmless, server hog, useful, or approved. Now in the past we had limited transactions in order to stop the cluttering of recent changes, but with the addition of the bot flag for registered bots, this no longer is an issue. The only other reason for this is to allow humans time to verify the bot entries, but I can assure you that I check a sample of the entries myself and no one is going to check them all anyway, so there is no point. -- Ram-Man 02:52, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I noticed that Rambot is updating article data (at least on counties). I was thinking that while it is doing this, now would be a good time to rephrase the poverty level description for under 18 / over 65 year olds. On the list of outstanding problems, Lima, Oklahoma is listed, but I wanted to make clear that the error in description applies to all Rambot articles. They do appear on maps and Googling reveals some (not many) people were born and died there (and rest of Google entries are junks, unfortunately). (I'm working on the Formosa disambiguation page]]) -- Menchi 20:26, Aug 9, 2003 (UTC)

I did work through the orphaned article list and discovered many of the rambot article in there. Strangely most were from a few counties, especially the St._Louis_County, Minnesota did lack a lot. User:Bcorr notified me shortly before I finished that those article were already linked once, and it seems like you did remove them yourself intentionally - see [3]. Can you still remember what was the reason for it? Or was it more accidentally that all township were removed? andy 21:40, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Did you notice my comment on the duplicate articles page about the name situation in New Jersey? I think all these places do need separate pages, certainly people in NJ would not think of these places as identical. Alex756 03:06, 2 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Hi Ram-Man,
Do you know of a reference with average elevation data? How about other geographic statistics, like rainfall, snowfall, temperature? Do you think it would be appropriate to add that kind of info to the geographic pages?

Please note that according to Wikipedia:Bots#Current_policy_on_running_bots, Rambot shouldn't make more than six edits per minute. -- User:Docu
In Wikipedia_talk:Bots/Archive_4#Disambiguation_Bot_.2F_Rambot_data, we agreed that they should use redirects, such as Asian (U.S. Census). Please update User:Rambot#Current accordingly. -- User:Docu
You may want to add the categories y with the sortkey "*", e.g. [[Category:Uinta County, Wyoming|*]]. It's the usual way to sort the article in the category with the identical title. -- User:Docu

It is not the numbers that are wrong, but the text describing them. The original text:

Thanks. I hope this is clear. -- ChrisRuvolo 19:31, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks, that works. I appreciate your efforts here. (RIT CS Dept Class of '01) -- ChrisRuvolo 21:43, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You have been back for an entire month and I just noticed! Such is the state of Wikipedia now; way too many edits to review. -- mav 00:44, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)
