National varieties of English

Wikipedia does not give priority to one national standard of English over others. Sometimes there are good reasons for an article to use one standard rather than another; for example, it is reasonable for the article San Francisco to use American English, and for Winston Churchill to use British English. However, when there are no specific reasons for an article to give preference to a particular variety of English, the variety originally used in the article should be retained. It is a mistake, and contrary to Wikipedia’s manual of style, to change articles to one's own preferred version of English when there are no such special reasons, as you did at Zoner Photo Studio, for example. I see that you have even imposed specifically American spellings in the article Kamay Botany Bay National Park, which is about an Australian subject, so the change was particularly inappropriate. JBW ( talk) 09:37, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply

I am really sorry, my device is set to British English. I will keep American spellings as they are. PlagueDoctor101 ( talk) 09:40, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply
Actually, on further thought I have realised that what I said above wasn't absolutely true. Spelling words with "-ize" and "-ization" rather than with "-ise" and "-isation" is not purely American: they also exist, but are rare, in British English. I don't know about Australia. However, it is still true that the spellings with "z" are not the usual spellings apart from in America. JBW ( talk) 11:43, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply

Hello

Hi, PlagueDoctor101, welcome to Wikipedia. I see you've already been busy editing. If you have any questions about editing then feel free to ask at my talk page or at the Teahouse. All the best, Zindor ( talk) 15:45, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply

Yeah, it honestly seems like I've been causing more harm then help though. Before I made my account, I did add information to pages, which seems like a better thing for me to do then Copyediting, as it seems like I am getting a lot of things wrong. PlagueDoctor101 ( talk) 19:54, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply
It takes everyone time to calibrate to these things, it's just part of gaining experience as an editor. You're more likely to run into problems when trying to fix small errors on otherwise decent articles than when dealing with larger problems on more problematic ones. I know the software recommended those pages to fix, so that's something i'll speak to the developers about.
I'd still encourage you to branch out into areas of editing that you are less comfortable with, but if you find enjoyment in adding information to articles then by all means just carry on with that. All contributions are valuable and thank you for your edits. Zindor ( talk) 23:08, 5 June 2022 (UTC) reply
I do want to learn how to do more complicated things on wikipedia, but I just currently do not have time. Wikipedia said that I was doing my edits (that got reverted) at around 8 or 9 in the morning when in actuality I was editing at 3AM when I was supposed to be asleep. I'm guessing Wikipedia uses Coordinated Universal Time? Anyway, enough about time zones. You are right, it did recommend those pages for me to fix, but most of the errors weren't even errors. Mostly stuff like British English vs. American English or people's last names or names of places. And so I thought "Well it wants me to edit it because users noticed it was wrong!" And so then I just caused more harm than help, wasting everyone's time.
I might even consider taking a break from Wikipedia to work on other things I have more experience in, things I am less likely to screw up. PlagueDoctor101 ( talk) 02:50, 6 June 2022 (UTC) reply
We do use universal co-ordinated time, that's correct. Look at it this way, in a short space of time you've learned about the policy surrounding english varieties and about handling line breaks. You're now an even more experienced editor and are far less likely to be reverted in future. I hope you stick around but if you need to take a step back then i look forward to when you do return.
