I noticed your comment on the talk page
here;can you say what Johnson actually said? When did he use the term? (I’m asking because my local library is all in packing cases at the moment, and for the next two years, so I can’t check the book myself).
I’d be interested to get to the bottom of this: The only reference I have found to the term was in Burn’s book on Bader. It was a comment from the October 1940 conference, which discussed the use of Big Wings against the expected (but non-materializing) renewal of the German air offensive in 1941. It theorized formations of two or more (up to seven) Big Wings and "for want of a better word" (as Burn's puts it) referred to them as Balbos.
I assumed from that comment that .a) the term wasn’t already in use before then .b) that it wasn’t an alternative term for the Big Wing itself and .c) it didn’t necessarily come into general use afterwards.
But anything Johnson said on the subject would be illuminating...
