New York City Meetup

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikimedia Chapters Meeting 2010, plan for the next stages of projects like Wiki-Conference NYC and Wikipedia Cultural Embassy, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the March meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

Hello, I’m writing today in reference to your deletion nomination for the 1937 St. Louis Cardinals season on 4 September 2010. I refer you to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1937 St. Louis Cardinals season for other editors who more eloquently explained why the article should be kept on Wikipedia. Since neither I nor any other members of Wikipedia:WikiProject St. Louis Cardinals had the opportunity to reply to this nomination, and considering it’s already been established that the article will remain on Wikipedia, I’d like to take this opportunity to reply to the nomination itself.
To provide you some background on this topic, let me first explain that the mission of WikiProject St. Louis Cardinals is to, “record, preserve, and organize the history of the St. Louis Cardinals and that of all articles related to the team on Wikipedia.” Unfortunately, the deletion nomination for the 1937 season ran in complete contradiction to both our Project’s mission and core values and beliefs.
Having previously experienced a one-and-done deletion nomination in the form of a category I created, I take every opportunity to support free speech and the retention of information on Wikipedia. It was shocking to see the 1937 season up for deletion, when there had been no recent prior debate raised about the merits of the MLB season articles. Any concerns about the article’s quality, relevance, or notability could have been quickly addressed by me or my fellow editors at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball. Not only that, but had you performed some amount of due diligence before nominating, I assert it would have been extremely clear the article met all notability guidelines. I strongly suggest you perform more research before taking the extremely drastic step of initiating a deletion nomination in the future.
I also fail to understand your lack of prior outreach concerning the MLB season articles prior to taking the extremely drastic step of initiating a deletion nomination. If you were taking responsibility for nominating the article, I assert it was your responsibility to notify both WP:Baseball and WP:St. Louis Cardinals of the deletion nomination, and to seek out the input of these relevant parties. It was not a move of good faith to say the least.
I understand where you coming from in nominating the article, being bold and seeing if this whole subset of articles could be deleted. The exact words you used were, “this is a test case, selected from the stubsensor list; there isn't any reason for this page as opposed to some other "foo season" article, but you have to start somewhere.”
While I respect your efforts on Wikipedia, I must make this point clear: your deletion nomination was tantamount to attempting to censure the very information both I and my colleagues are attempting to record and preserve on Wikipedia. If you assert that this was a “test case” and that, “you have to start somewhere,” I assert that spurring debate by placing the future of a Wikipedia article on the line by forgoing research and open debate is unethical and morally abhorrent. I utilize free speech on Wikipedia through my edits of articles, and through the maintenance and simple existence of information about the St. Louis Cardinals on Wikipedia. Hence, I have no tolerance for any Wikipedia editor who knowingly or unknowingly attempts to undermine or silence the free speech I utilize on Wikipedia.
I noticed that your userpage lists you as a “soldier of the Counter-Vandalism Unit.” I too abhor vandalism, and have had to fight it since my first few edits to Ozzie Smith’s article. It appears that in this case the term vandalism is a matter of perspective though, as I would view any successful deletion of a Cardinals-related article that meets the established guidelines of WikiProject Baseball as vandalism itself. Hence, I urge you to pursue edits that add verifiable info to Wikipedia, and to refrain from attempting to remove the work that at least one editor thought worthy enough to be included on the wiki.
