This is just a friendly reminder that Wikipedia Weekly has been released with a new episode!
Actually, it's a couple of new episodes. I've been moving to an place closer to campus (my commute was getting to me) and hence, the reminder message was a little slow in coming out. So slow we put out 2 where before we had 1.
Anyways, all is good now, here's the new episodes!
As always you can download old episodes and more at http://wikipediaweekly.com/!
Please spread the word about Wikipedia Weekly, we're trying to spread the word so that people know about the project, we've got some cool guests lined up and it makes it much more fun if people tune in!

Howdy there. I added myself to the approval list. I think that I have a lot to offer Wikipedia by monitoring new pages, and that I would be able to do a faster job if I were able to use NPWatcher. -- Adam Riley Talk 01:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi! I was just wondering if I could get approval for NPWatcher. I know it says you must have 300 edits, but, does that mean mainspace? I only have half of that. But, I do Newpages patrol a lot, and most of the User Talk edits are for users that people have placed a {{db}} or similar tag. I think that if I get NPWatcher, I can build my experience with dealing with issues, and more newpages that violate any rule will be taken off.
Thanks!
Cheers,

Well, you said "feel free to nag," so here I am. :) My request for NPWatcher approval has been pending for a week, so this is just a friendly reminder asking you to look at the Check Page. -- Russ (talk) 12:01, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Can I ask a favour? There's some discussion over at Wikipedia_talk:Featured_article_candidates#Multi_FA_template (mostly provoked by me) about a bot to carry out FA status updating. Could you cast your eye over the proposal (near the bottom) to check that it is technically possible? I know it should be possible, but I've purposedly stayed away from bot writing, so I don't know the system limitations and permissions required - I can't see it would need admin privs but I might have missed something. I don't want to get further into writing the template if the bot isn't going to be practical. Cheers, Yomangani talk 13:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Howdy - I noticed that your bot MartinBotIII is removing the coatofarms tag from images, leaving many of them with no copyright tag at all. For those images left with no copyright tag, it seems to me that your bot should also be adding {{ nld}} and notifying the uploader. Otherwise someone else will have to go through and check all the images that your bot edited. Of course, there could be a very good reason for not doing this that I'm not aware of :-) - SCEhard T 21:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for enabling me, Martin. I've tried the software and I have a few suggestions already. On the Maintenance tab, I'd suggest {{ Uncategorized}} as an additional option. Also, instead of the button arrangement that only allows you to insert one tag per page, how about having checkboxes so that, if necessary, a user could place more than one maintenance notice at the same time? -- Russ (talk) 21:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi,
You raised an imprtant issue on my talk page. I replied there, but I will repeat my reply here, to make sure you see it.
Voting on matters on which one is incompetent is certanly NOT voting in good faith. Such users and such attitudes should be discouraged. Such behaviour patterns drive away highly qualified editors and lower the quality of the information on WP. The good guys get exhausted trying to clean up the little piles of dog poop left behind. linas 01:17, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

So what is the next step in the mediation process? csloat 17:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Isarig's statement has made several outright distortions of my position as well as of the issues at stake. I am tempted to address them one by one on the mediation page but I do not think that will be productive. Should I just wait until all have said what they have to say and then list the distortions? Or wait until you summarize each position and then only address those distortions actually relevant to the contested issues? Some of his comments (e.g. charges related to the Valerie Plame article) seem totally unrelated to the issue at hand and while I feel the need to address them for the purpose of truth, I don't see how that will help the mediation process. Similar issues may come up when the other two disputants have their say. Your guidance on this will be helpful; thanks! csloat 22:33, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi MArtin, Many thanks for the welcome! Rer my own case, it may well be that I can come to a reasonable settlement having had a frank exchange with khaosworks, but I won't take any cases until I have decided what to do about that thanks. Thank you for the suggestion, I'll get on it right away. By the way, I myself have pretty much no knowledge of this subject either, I've never even shopped at a Lord & Taylor in my life (though I think I walked through the store that used to be in Manchester, Connecticut on the way to the mall once...) It is due to this fact that I insisted to the other editors working on the article to dig up citations to differentiate the fact from the fiction on the page. How long do we need to wait for the other users to enter mediation? Is it reasonable to make changes to the article that both Isarig and I seem to agree on at this point (the removal of Frontpagemagazine citations and the restoration of Cole's response that was deleted by Armon after the article entered mediation)? To a degree I understand your position, but I also disagree - notability is definately an issue up for debate. I listed Jared's releases, compilation appearances and a short bio - all of which would be considered notable by his fans and related groups. He has a strong following with the west coast independent music scene, as well as being a major contributor to his original home town in TN - therefore I think deleting the page for not being 'notable' was a mistake. Allalom 16:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
According for the notability guidelines for the inclusion of bands, which is a touchy subject to begin with, the Jared Colinger page did meet me basic requirements - and even if that is in dispute, according to the guidelines page that does not create a basis for a speedy deletion, it should have followed the standard articles of deletion process. Allalom 16:46, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I would prefer that, as it gives me time to state my case, and, if necessary, add additional information to prove its notability. thank you. Allalom 16:50, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

This could be useful, because many new pages haven't yet been categorized. A ecis Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984. 22:52, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
I hope you have not made a mistake giving the above the New Page gizmos. He speedily deleted a stub I had started on the highly notable Master of the Playing Cards (now redone) within about 3 minutes of my first edit. His reasons for doing so escape me completely - any cursory check would have shown many redlinks for this artist, who has his own Commons category etc. Incidentally he left an automated message on my talk page which did not begin a new section.
Looking at the surviving articles from his contributions, his ability to assess notability would appear to be unacceptably poor - look at Rede Lecture!!
Please monitor his usage of his new toys carefully!
Happy holidays Johnbod 22:55, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, I made the change that Isarig appeared to agree to, and he quickly reverted it, claiming it was "mere name-calling." I don't think it is any more name-calling than the original charge by Karsh that Cole is responding to (you can see Isarig's revert here). I did not revert his revert, but I am concerned about the situation. Because I am the one who initiated mediation and because I am trying to be reasonable about the process, I feel as if my side of the mediation is being punished -- Armon reverts when the page enters mediation, I make a good faith edit to restore it to its pre-mediation state, based on Isarig's own statements in mediation, and he quickly reverts again without any attempt to respect the process of mediation. Frankly, I've been tempted to abandon Wikipedia completely as a result of my interaction with these two users -- I've been here for two years roughly and have had other sour interactions with individuals I don't agree with, but never have I felt this way about the project. It appears that a few organized users can easily take over any page they want, in this case turning what should be a biography of a notable individual into a scurrilous hatchet-job. My attempts to interact with these users are often met with ridicule and the debates degenerate into schoolyard taunting and bullying (look at the recent interaction I had with Isarig over an otherwise totally noncontroversial point that I made over at this page). Thanks again for agreeing to mediate; I think it will be a difficult job. csloat 02:51, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Martin, I used NPWatcher for the first time yesterday and listed an AfD here. All worked except the log entry was malformed as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2006 rsday, 28 December 28. Hi, RefDeskBot archived 2006 December 30 pages to 2007 December 30. I manually moved the pages, except the Computing and Language pages which I had moved with cut-and-paste, thinking the pages hadn't been archived at all.
Another thing is the "The page you are currently viewing is {{#ifexist:Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Computing/2008 January 9|an archive page|a [[Wikipedia:Transclusion|transcluded]] archive page}}." message; it used 2008 instead of 2007.

Hi, glad to hear the code works. Unfortunately there still seems to be bugs with the actual implementation of the image deletion buttons as of version 0.8.5.0. I just deleted a number of "no license" images using NPWatcher, and none of them where automaticaly de-linked. In fact nothing visibly happened at all, previous versions have reloaded the page after deleting something, now nothing happens. Had to manualy reload the page to see that it had even been deleted (it had), but file links where still present, no fancy image syntax that should have tripped up the removal code either [7] [8] [9]. -- Sherool (talk) 14:56, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to bug you, but a while back, about everything I did (creating pages and adding images relating to Trainz) got deleted. This was my fault, because I indeed did things on purpose, such as blanking the TRS2006 page and adding a delete template, and adding things like "i stole this from auran without permission" on the image pages just to get them deleted. Well, I was very upset about something at the time, and I was wondering if you could undelete the images and articles I made? I'm sorry, I'll make sure not to let stuff get to me that bad again. Martinp23, someone named "Stbalbach" attached a sock puppet accusation on My Talk page. I just reverted the page but I think this was malicious and I told him so on his Talk page. I only have one account and I do not use sock puppets. I'm wondering how can someone get away with making such an accusation without proof. I am requesting your help in this matter. A new version of Celebrity big brother is going to start tonight. I suggest you Semi-Protect the page, as when such things as this occur, it causes a rush of vandalism to the page. As I experimented this with the X-Factor, which was also flooded with vandalism on the final night.-- Rasillon 09:46, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Greetings Martin.
During the middle of December, you removed the tag {{ coatofarms}} from a very large number of images following a debate on TFD, however people on WP:HV don't normally frequent TFD debates, so it looks like this debate wasn't noticed at all by the people editing the affected articles. Since finding coats of arms images is often somewhat complicated given that many of them are no longer in active use or because we have to look for old images, it would have been a nice gesture if you'd notified WP:HV about what you were about to do or at least made a list of the affected images afterwards, so we would have at least a possibility of assessing the situation and analysing the affected images. As I am writing this, Orphanbot is running amok on the heraldic material and this will result in tons of extra work for us. E.g. official German heraldry is PD by law, but this is getting removed along with the rest. Other insignia come from a 100 year old Swedish encyclopedia, just to name two examples.
I am aware that you are doing a lot of work on TFD, but next time, please warn any affected project before untagging hundreds of images. Somebody has redirected the affected template to {{ Logo}} which is not entirely inaccurate, although {{ symbol}} would be probably be better in 90% of all cases. These images are generally used under a fair use claim since not only copyrights but also other legal concerns have to be taken into account when it comes to government symbols. Given that a new TFD debate seems to be about to delete the {{ Insignia}} warning as well, I don't see any other option than to reclassify many images from PD-old to fairuse to warn people about potential legal for unauthorized use. I found the deletion debate in the TFD archive and if editors found this template so inadequate, I find it very odd that noone chose to inform WP:HV about such concerns. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 10:09, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
An editor has asked for a deletion review of Template:Coat of arms. Since you closed the deletion discussion for (or speedy-deleted) this article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. -- Evertype· ✆ 11:48, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm spending a lot of valuable editing time adding the {{seal}} tag to images from which your bot has removed the deprecated {{coatofarms}}, without replacing it with anything. I'm trying to keep up with them as Orphanbot finds them, but some are getting deleted as having no tag (which they dis when they were uploaded). Any chance your bot can substitute {{coatofarms}} with {{seal}} rather than leaving the image untagged? Lozleader 10:25, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I've just added myself to the approval request page, but then noticed that I don't actually meet the edit count required. However, I've been doing New Pages (and Recent Changes) patrolling for some time now, and feel that access to NPWatcher would make things a great deal more efficient. I hope I qualify on that basis. Many thanks, Chrisd87 11:36, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your support in the RfA on my behalf. It is an honor to have received your expression of confidence. To be chosen as an administrator requires a high level of confidence by a broad section of the community. Although I received a great deal of support, at this time I do not hold the level of confidence required, and the RfA did not pass. It is my wish that I will continue to deserve your confidence. Can I ask you to subst all existing versions of this shortcut and delete it? Cross-namespace shortcuts are a headache for mirrors, as well as giving a pseudo-stamp-of-approval to something in your namespace: This should not have a "WP" prefix. - brenneman 01:15, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I know, I did a little mistake there. It can't block users, but its concept is valuble, its an anti-troll bot, which reverts and detects comments from trolls on userpages, and reverts any use of bad language. Which is excellent because language should be kept clean on Wikipedia.-- Rasillon 17:26, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I noticed that you speedily deleted Jamie White for non-notability (I also noticed that it was previously deleted as an uncontested {{ PROD}}). I would like to ask you to restore all previous edits to this page, as I believe there should be no question as to her notability, at least in the Los Angeles area. I was looking for information on her recent firing when I noticed the article was gone. She had been a morning host on KYSR for quite some time, on the number 1 show in the area for at least a portion of that. At one time she co-hosted with Danny Bonaduce. Further, there are mainstream articles which reference her or her show, e.g. The Los Angeles Times, ( another LA Times article), The Orange County Register, and E! Online. If the article needs improvement to establish her notability, I will gladly do that after the page is restored. Thank you. DHowell 20:23, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi Martinp23. I'm trying to learn how to use the dotnetwikibot framework, and I was wondering if you could send me the source code for one of your bots that uses it (such as MartinBotII) so I can learn by example. If you'd prefer not to publish the source code that's fine also. Thanks! — Mets501 ( talk) 23:35, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi - I'll be happy to send you some code - the main pile of code for MartinBotII is a mess - I'm porting it off into seperate sub projects now (all the tasks were in one file, then I realised how bad it really was). I've got the peer review task in a seperate project (and it works), so I'll tidy it up and send it you. If I have one issue with the framework - it's the number of page loads it makes - it logs in before every page fetch, and uses special:Export a lot, which leaves it very prone to Wikipedia errors (502 bad gateway is a frequent one now), so I've started to make my own framework just a class right now for the simpler stuff (page loading, saving, getting categories and finding the creator of a page), which uses Httprequests with shared cookies, so you don't need to log in every time (and uses query api to get page data, rather than special:Export). Anyway, you'll find out what I mean if you try to use it a lot :). I'll send you an email when I upload it to a server. Thanks,
Mart

I was just casually browsing Wikipedia on my work computer and a message came up saying that my IP address has been banned from editing pages. When NP Watcher added speedy delete comments to a user's talk page, it is incorrectly formatting the header for the comment. There is a space before ==Image:blahblahblah listed for deletion==. This creates the text as preformatted text and does not insert it as a header thus is becomes just another comment under an existing header.
For an example, check out the my talk page. I have edited 20K Leagues Under the Sea - WDW.jpg to be correctly formatted. Directly below that is Big thunder wdw.jpg in the incorrect format.

Thanks!

I guess even vandalism can have some positive effects! LOL! -- Elipongo ( Talk| contribs) 19:27, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi Martinp23, I see that the TfD was closed as a 'weak keep', did that happen to include the very large number of entries deleted by an annonymous user: [1]? I'd like to see all the votes counted and become a part of the archived debate...perhaps that section can be restored, counted and become part of the archive. Thanks!

Thanks for updating the tags on the images in my Ernest Emerson article and the speed in which it was handled! -- Mike Searson 00:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
No probelm - I thought you wnated us to comment on the issue of MEQ/antiwar.com, but if you'd rather do it as a round-by-round kind of thing, I'm a happy to do so. One requeest - I just noticed you were asking for 3rd party views of these publications, and I want to add a 3rd party view of MEQ - could I add that? Isarig 01:04, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi again. I used "Delete (nonsense) and warn" but it didn't do the warn. But it did when I clicked it with "Leave notability warning" checked, and left two warnings. You can see the result here [12]. I'm using the latest download, still with .NET 2. Thanks as always. -- Steve (Slf67) talk 04:51, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
I have a new bot up for approval Martin. User:Nitrobot-- Rasillon 17:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
The programming language is AWB, I thought it meant "Language" language, like; English, German Etc.-- Rasillon 17:47, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks,
Mart

Hello, I would like to get approval to use NPWatcher. I go on page patrol while sitting at home. I have been awarded two Barnstars and contributed directly to the deletion of 18 pages. I also do rv vandal edits and watch 198 pages of interest to me. Thanks, Ronbo76 13:01, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Can you please join the discussion of the problem at Wikipedia_talk:Reference_desk#Reference_Desk_Problem ? StuRat 05:52, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I cant find the Entertainment Desk archive? here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives ? -- Delma1 12:39, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
But if you use the subst before the template, any edits done will not be done on the actual template, so then the archive will be useless. Do you get me? This is regarding using subst on the current ref desk page in the archive template. -- Foundby 13:30, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Anyways I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work for helping the Ref Desk. Thnx. -- Delma1 13:55, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't mean to disrupt the mediation.-- CSTAR 00:42, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

I noticed yesterday that the nn-warn username is being truncated by 1 character, meaning the talk pages are created but not to the right editors. Someone else noticed too, and left some examples on my talk page, FYI. Thanks again. -- Steve (Slf67) talk 23:20, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi,
I was just casually browsing Wikipedia on my work computer and a message came up saying that my IP address has been banned from editing pages. I wasn't trying to anyway but I was just wondering why you've done this? The reason cited is chronic vandalism and spam. Does that mean someone at my office has been messing about? I've got utmost respect for Wikipedia and would be very dissapointed if one of my colleagues has been behaving in such a manner. If you have any time please let us know what's happened. Yours faithfully, Joe Williams, Reporter, Qatar Tribune newspaper. 03:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Martinp23...i recently typed an entry regarding the incredible amoeba which was deleted...i have just re-typed the entry including better information about the subject. is this acceptable? i wasn't sure what the protocol was... thanks, matt 03:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
very much! cheers matt f. 03:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I wonder if you have any more information you can give me about the specifics of the request on Ticket ID: 2006122210009701 ? I am not denying the article needs a cleanup, it does, but I am having trouble finding the typos and stereotyping alluded to. Also i am not too sure when it would be appropriate to remove the tag? -- Zeraeph 10:40, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your support in my my RfA, which passed with a tally of 117/0/1. I hope that my conduct as an admin lives up to the somewhat flattering confidence the community has shown in me. As far as I am aware two unprecedented (or at least very rare) things happened with my RfA both of which you noted: I accepted at the exact start of the new year (I think hasn't been attempted before) and Taxman closed it after exactly 7 days :) Please don't hesitate to leave a message on my talk page should you need anything or want to discuss something with me.-- Nilf anion ( talk) 15:44, 9 January 2007 (UTC) |

I'm not exactly sure what's gone wrong but I've manually subst'd the template, and it seems fine, so the problem must be with RefDeskBot -- VectorPotential 15:42, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I award you this barnstar for your vandal-tackling iron fist. Show no mercy! :-) Regards, Hús ö nd 22:06, 11 January 2007 (UTC) |
I removed it from the article because I supplied it on the image. I am not violating anything, what is your issue why did you remove the rationale I supplied on the image page. I am going to report you to an aministrator if you don't stop with your destructive unexplained edits edits. You have no right to remove my fair use dispute. -- E tac 22:45, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
By the way I never removed the tag from the image, you removed my dispute. As far as I lnow it isn't required to display that it is tagged on the article. -- E tac 22:52, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
An email from who? I see no difference between a post on a forum and an email. -- E tac 22:55, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
That forum is linked to from the bands official webpage see here so it is hardly ambiguous. An email would be harder to verify than this in my opinion. -- E tac 23:19, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
I took your advice and forwarded an email with the permission.

I heard in a documentary that some bees become notorious drunks and are kept out of the hives by "bee bouncers" until they sober up. When the bees are repeat offenders, the bee bouncers might punish them by chewing their legs off. Comments?-- Filll 16:56, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi. I took the liberty of adding myself to the permission list, as admins are invited to to. I wanted to thank you anyway for making the tool, and I am looking forward to try it. Best wishes, -- Chris 73 | Talk 20:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Why are images that have uploaded being tagged as not meeting FU requirements, when this one Image:IronMaidenBand.jpg offers no better explanation than anything I have uploaded, is on a much more famous bands page so it is seen much more, has been there much longer, and yet has seemed to slip by untagged? -- E tac 22:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
