Question from CharityPeno (00:25, 22 July 2024)

Hello - I'm disclosing my COI as the wife of the person who is the subject of the wiki page "Ron S. Peno". Please know that Ron's birth name is not "Ronald Stephen Valentine Peno", it is "Ronald Stephen Peno". I have his birth certificate to prove it. Can this please be corrected since I am not allowed to do so myself? There is a lot of incorrect information currently published on Ron's page. How do I best ensure that the facts are corrected if I cannot provide those facts myself? The current writing is also very clunky and in parts, poorly written. I would really like to have Ron's page edited so that it reads more clearly, concisely, factually and professionally. Thanks. -- CharityPeno ( talk) 00:25, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Hi @ CharityPeno! Thanks for asking your question. While Ronald's birth name may not include "Valentine", I cannot fine any sources that state he changed his name. If you can fine a reliable secondary source, you can create a COI Edit Request on the article's talk page. We cannot accept an unpublished birth certificate as per WP:PRIMARY. Since you have a Conflict of Interest, I suggest you read WP:COI, specifically WP:COIEDIT. As per that guideline, you can still edit the article even though you have a conflict of interest, however you must only edit based on Reliable sources that anyone can access, as long as you disclose your COI, (See WP:Disclose). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Lord serious pig 08:25, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Thanks so much for your quick response. Jeff Jenkins has mentioned RSVP as a made up persona/band name, but the reference on the wiki infers that this is a fact. How can I prove it with a publicly accessible reference when it was never an issue of discussion - because it was never true in the first place? Every single other mention of his name in every article ever written is either Ron Peno or Ron S. Peno because his name is, and has always been Ronald Stephen Peno. He never changed it to Ronald Stephen Valentine Peno, he never performed as Ronald Stephen Valentine Peno, and he has never been known as Ronald Stephen Valentine Peno - he was playing around with names that RSVP might stand for - as in Ron S. Peno and the Return to Senders. How I can I prove that he changed his name back when he never changed it in the first place? Does Jeff Jenkins need to make a statement clarifying what he meant by his comment in the referenced article? I find it troubling that anyone can write conjecture in an article published online and that misinformation then be construed as fact on a Wikipedia page which then spreads the same misinformation as other writers/researchers/people take it as fact. Yet primary source material like an actual birth certificate or statement from his wife is not accepted as proof of fact. I’d be very grateful if you could advise me how to go about getting this incorrect information about my recently deceased husband corrected. It’s more than a little distressing for his bereaved family. Sincerely Charity 120.21.81.74 ( talk) 09:00, 22 July 2024 (UTC) reply
This one is hard. As per WP:PRIMARYCARE, birth certificates generally shouldn't be used. The best I can recommend is to try and find sources that say he didn't have "valentine" in his name, and/or bring it up in the article's talk page.
