AWB

Hey, I've been wondering how you operate AWB. It seems you're really good at fixing typos and such on many articles. Your recent typo fix on Harvard University caught my eye. Could you give me a few pointers in how to use the program? I am an approved user already and I've tried to use it on my desktop back home (I'm on vacation at the moment) and I just can't get used to the program without it crashing on me. lol Any help you can provided will be appreciated. Thanks and Happy 2008! - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 05:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I am just getting used to AWB myself, but here's how I use it to correct typos:
* I turn on the option Enable RegexTypoFix (but no other options).
* I pick a typo from the Wikipedia:Lists_of_common_misspellings such as almsot or becuase and make a list using the "Make from Google Search" option.
* I start the process and, if the suggestions are simple and reasonable (they are not always), I "save" to make the correction.
A few things to watch out for:
* Though you can double-click bad edit suggestions to tell AWB not to make them, it will still include them in the edit summary! I don't know how to make it not do that, so in that case I just edit the page in a separate browser and tell AWB to ignore it.
* AWB will find more typos than just the one you searched for, so make sure you want all of them before you accept changes! If I don't, again I just edit in a separate browser.
I am also a big fan of User:Lupin/Live_spellcheck and the other pages that use the anti-vandal tool, and actually do most of my typo checking and anti-vandalism patrolling with these. Have you tried them?
Hope this helps. Happy New Year! KathrynLybarger ( talk) 06:18, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting my typos and mispelling on my Rossion Q1 article. I didnt catch the mispelling until you fixed it. Nate 687 ( talk) 23:00, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for catching the misspellings on Public Sphere, I have been working all day on that article, and forgot to send it through a spell checker before I saved the last draft. I assure you that your work is appriciated Coffeepusher ( talk) 07:20, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

A note on AWB

Please don't forget to look at the surrounding text when you're cruising along with the AWB. You changed the word "summery", in reference to "summer", to "summary". (in the Samhain article.) - Kathryn NicDhàna 06:53, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Guer(r)illa

Hello to the owner of a copyeditor's barnstar (gee, I must admit I'm jealous...)

By using the "random article" key, I detected this change you did, preceding this change of someone else. I'm not a native speaker, but I guess the spelling with the two r's is the correct one, and the one r is wrong? On the other hand, after your modification the link did not work any longer, because it points to Guerilla phase of the Second Chechen War, i.e. with one r only. Thus, should this article's title be renamed? There are also a lot of links pointing to it...

-- Cyfal ( talk) 00:33, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello! Thanks for pointing this out. I just checked a dictionary, and it looks like guerilla is an acceptable variant spelling of guerrilla, so I guess I copy-edited too aggressively and there is no need to change the title. I have created a redirect Guerrilla phase of the Second Chechen War so both should work now. KathrynLybarger ( talk) 02:21, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
That's fine that guerilla is also a variant, because renaming would be a hassle, due to the existence of the articles Guerilla phase of the Second Chechen War (2000)(2008). Thank you! -- Cyfal ( talk) 09:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Howdy! You have been correcting the Public Sphere article for a while now, and I really appriciate your help. I am currently done with the major revisions to the article, and I need someone to look it over to see if it makes sence. evidently all the other editors left some time before I started, and I was hoping you could see what you think. It is a specialised section of communication studies, but if someone who hasn't been exposed to the theory before dosn't understand the page, then I need to rework it untill they do...that and the fact that you know grammer better than I do could help improve the article.
If you have the time I would appriciate a look through, and then just contact me to let me know what made sence and what needs to be worked on...probably on the discussion page since future editors will need to know why changes have taken place. Thank you again Coffeepusher ( talk) 06:32, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for being bold and reworking this article! The content is very readable, and reasonably interesting to someone with no knowledge of the subject (that's me!). I did a few rounds of spelling correction and clean-up. The only non-minor change I made was to indicate that a work mentioned early on was Habermas' habilitationsschrift rather than his doctoral thesis (which was called Das Absolute und die Geschichte. Von der Zwiespältigkeit in Schellings Denken according to the page on Jürgen Habermas). Hope this helps! -- KathrynLybarger ( talk) 04:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the look through. I am glad you understand the concept and that it is "reasonably interesting" (I got a chuckle out of that one, I have come to find that dry theory isn't everyone's idea of a good Sunday afternoon...just me) for you. Thank you for the addition of the habilwachamacallit, it makes the article even more credible and I was unaware a change needed to be done. wow! I learned something! anyway, if you come across anything else that you can think of to improve the article I would really appreciate it, otherwise I will see you after all my misspellings.
