Razing of Friesoythe

Hi K.e.coffman, I wanted ask if you could take a look at the article and talk pages of the Razing of Friesoythe, a featured article. The article has appeared on the Home page and details an alleged attack by the Canadian army against a German town in the closing days of World War II in Europe. I have noted some concerns on the talk page but the editor who has responded to me there is one of the principal authors of the page and has continuously reverted any edits that I have made (even requests for additional sources when only one is given) and accuses me of edit waring. I would appreciate if an additional editor who is interested in WWII military history took a look at this page and its discussion when you have a chance. Thanks in advance and hope you are well. @ Monopoly31121993(2): thank you for the note. I'm not familiar with the topic, so I may not be able to comment on the legality of the Allied action. However, I found the lead image to be only tangentially related, so I may raise this issue in the future. -- K.e.coffman ( talk) 01:26, 5 May 2020 (UTC) reply
Thanks @ K.e.coffman):. Anyone who can join the discussion there from the outside would be helpful. Currently a couple of editors who have written most of the page and pushed it through reviews to FA status are making it impossible to edit (I'm talking reverting requests for additional sources and citations even). Thanks again. Monopoly31121993(2) ( talk) 14:46, 7 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Kurowski / Töppel

Hi, I came across a potentially useful article by Roman Töppel (unfortunately, it is just an extract, I don't know the actual journal in which it was published) from which I added a bit to Franz Kurowski. I put it where I thought it best fit but feel free to move or revert if you don't think it works. As I was reading Töppel's article I thought it might be a useful source for the Panzer Aces page but unfortunately it does not actually say much specifically about that book/series. Maybe still be useful to demonstrate that some soldiers he worked with/interviewed recognised that he fictionalised things? Cheers, Zawed ( talk) 00:06, 11 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi K.e.coffman/Archive/2020, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Hi, I hope that things are good with you. You are hopefully aware that a nascent MilHist task force on War Crimes has recently been set up in its incubator by Buidhe. A number of articles are referenced as good practice exemplars - you may recognise a number. An area missing an article is "Trial". I was giving consideration to attempting to fill it by creating a separate article on the war crimes trial of Kurt Mayer. However, I am aware that you have only recently taken the Kurt Mayer article to GA, and I don't wish to tread on your toes if, for example, you were giving consideration to working it up for a FAC at some stage. Would you have any issues with a separate and more detailed article being created and worked on? Thanks. Gog the Mild ( talk) 11:42, 24 May 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Gog the Mild: thank you for the note and the info on the incubator. In re: your other point, Meyer was a somewhat insignificant historical figure, so I'm not sure if a separate article is warranted. My opinion is driven in part by the observation that the main bio article would most likely get way more views that the daughter article. Compare page views of "Trial of Erich von Manstein" with the main article. But I certainly have no objections to such an article being created, nor any other. In the same vein, if you'd like to take the Meyer article to FA, I would welcome that.
As of late, my focus has generally been on improving existing articles that have poor sourcing, lack sourcing or are underdeveloped. Related to that, I've had aspirations to work on either High Command Trial or Generalplan Ost, with a goal of taking them to GA. Joachim Peiper is pretty close to GAN, but the trial section still needs a re-write. If you are perhaps interested in collaborating, please let me know. -- K.e.coffman ( talk) 18:28, 25 May 2020 (UTC) reply
Have to agree with K.e.coffman here. Sub articles are a tricky thing, at times they pull too much out of the main article and get very little viewing/reading on their own. Reminds me of when there used to be an article on the personal life of Marilyn Monroe. I believe it to be better to increase the section of the War crimes and trial of each of the articles you mention; if you’re so inclined. Cheers, Kierzek ( talk) 00:41, 26 May 2020 (UTC) reply
Hi both. Thanks for your thoughts. For clarity, I wasn't thinking of reducing the existing article at all, just adding further detail in a new one. I am not much motivated by page views or lack of; checking just now, several of my FAs are averaging less than 15 views a day. I shall think on your comments, and especially the generous permission to take the whole article further. I need to check what sources I can access.
That's a pretty hefty article on Peiper (what a loathsome character), and on a skim it looks to be in good shape. I don't see why it shouldn't have a run at FAC without too much further work. I would be happy to help out with the article, but it might be best if this were in a normal Wikipedian way. I don't think that I would bring enough to the party to be a "collaborator". I have a good set of general texts on WWII and some pockets of deeper knowledge, but would be out of my depth on several areas of this article source-wise. Also I generally have avoided WWII articles as the field tends to be both crowded and contentious - so again a lack of experience. I do, I think, have skills at copy editing, a knowledge of the MoS and an awareness of what is needed to get an article through FAC (22 FAs over the past 18 months; 2 currently at FAC). Anyway, if you wish to withdraw the offer, absolutely no offence will be taken. Otherwise, perhaps you would care to give me a part of the article or a more general theme, and I will see what I can do. You can always revert what you don't like. Gog the Mild ( talk) 11:38, 26 May 2020 (UTC) reply
@ Gog the Mild: I don't plan to withdraw my offer in re: Meyer. The article does not belong to me, and if someone wants to improve the article further, that's a great thing. However, your message gave me an idea about nominating Arthur Nebe for FA. This was one of the first articles that I encountered as being filled with distortions, abuse of sources, and outright fabrications. So it holds somewhat of a special place in my editing history. Would you mind evaluating the page for MOS and general FA readiness? I would really appreciate it. -- K.e.coffman ( talk) 12:22, 28 May 2020 (UTC) reply
  • It was Peiper I was reticent about.
  • Meyer: thanks. I have put it on my look at properly when I have time list. I would hope to work up the whole article. Difficult to know where that might lead. If I struggle source wise I may fall back on a separate trial article. We'll see.
  • Nebe. Sure. My usual full pre-FAC work over; no problem. I have a few things on at the moment - both on and off Wiki - so it may be a day or three before I can get into it.

Antisemitism in Poland: Motion (May 2020)

The following is added as a remedy to the Antisemitism in Poland arbitration case: 7) 500/30 restriction: All IP editors, users with fewer than 500 edits, and users with less than 30 days' tenure are prohibited from editing articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. This prohibition may be enforced preemptively by use of extended confirmed protection (ECP), or by other methods such as reverts, pending changes protection, and appropriate edit filters. Reverts made solely to enforce the 500/30 rule are not considered edit warring.

    • Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may use the Talk: namespace to post constructive comments and make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive. Talk pages where disruption occurs may be managed by the methods mentioned above.
    • Standard discretionary sanctions as authorized by the Eastern Europe arbitration case remain in effect for this topic area.
