I wrote this last night in Quora:
Drat; that was not my intent. I was trying to brush off an intemperate fool, gently. No great effort. Now I discover that there is substance, behind the whiny question which threw off the other repliers. And, it’s substance that interests me. This means I have something important to do; pretty much the same thing I do in normal times. Here’s a picture I took at one of the last teaching sessions I did before the plague tightened its grip.
Since then I’ve been mostly a picture curator. Last week was your big chance, at our regular monthly meeting.
Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/December 2020
As it happened, a newbie in a somewhat similar fix attended, and I didn’t speak up because she’s far away and her topic didn’t much interest me. Had I been aware of a second customer, I would have slacked off my usual curatorial activities and found out how to carry out something like my usual tutoring but via video conference; that will probably be the key. I must learn to use a service like Zoom that allows screen sharing. Fortunately, some of my Wikibuddies are familiar with the technology. I shall ask their advice and eventually make this a routine, displacing less important Wiki routines.
Pending this practice, my earlier advice remains more or less correct. For writing your first article the best method is, don’t. Softly, softly, catchee monkey. I wrote some of the Bloomingdale Road section of the Broadway article years ago; probably some scraps of my text survive. Plan a gradual course of additions. You can add a few sentences and see what reaction you get. Day or two later, assuming no explosion, another few sentences. When large enough (a few paragraphs) it can be its own subsection. Oh, it’s not a Bloomingdale Road section; it’s a 19th Century section, and indeed a sentence or two are still my own prose. Whatever.
The Bloomingdale Library has no article, though its being a NYCLPC Landmark pretty much carries it over the WP:Notability bar. It is listed in List of New York Public Library branches.
That’s probably a good candidate for your first new article since at a glance I don’t see a WP article that ought to mention it.
I was unaware of the Bloomingdale School of Music but I fairly often visit the neighborhood to snap photos; last time was about a month ago when the current third wave of COVID-19 had not yet gathered steam. Next visit will be after it passes. Any other Bloomingdale schools in the neighborhood, I am not aware, though of course the former Bloomingdale Insane Asylum is now Columbia U; the cynical will say it’s not much of a change. Oh, is this PS 163? Anyway, one cute trick would be to collect a bunch of sourced information about W97 St, and start a new article about the street, with a paragraph about the school.
Well, it looks like you’ve roped me into a project. I shall copy most of this into your User talk page; look for the orange alert that you have a message. Better to conduct correspondence there. Wiki software is greatly inferior for correspondence, but it’s public. Every Wikkan can see it (well, the whole World Wide Web can) but we can signal fellow editors that there’s something going on that will interest them. I know a few who are likely, and we can have a gang of experienced editors to work with your neighborhood historians. Incidentally I’m one of the more elderly Wikipedians, though not the oldest I know. Jim.henderson ( talk) 13:26, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
A tag has been placed on File:1836 Colton map of Manhattan.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Pkbwcgs ( talk) 19:12, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
