Interesting! And where will this article go? Murder in New Zealand?
For Murder statistics you might want to check the Crime Statistics reports on the Police website at http://www.police.govt.nz/service/statistics/. You should be able to get data back to 1995 for Murder. Also, between 1988 and about 1995 Police only published Homicide statistics. Prior to that, Murder statistics are published in Police Annual Reports back to at least 1900. Also, for a comparison of international statistics read http://www.justice.govt.nz/pubs/reports/2002/intl-comparisons-crime/index.html
Also be aware that Murder Type Offences reported in Police statistics are not just counts of Murders, but also counts of related offences. You should also be careful about whether you use the Fiscal or Calendar year statistics, as the numbers are different. Also note the caveat on the Murder Type Offences given on the Recorded Crime Statistics from Statistics New Zealand - drill into the violence category of the tables from http://www.stats.govt.nz/products-and-services/table-builder/crime-tables/default.htm to see the statistics down to individual offences and related caveats.
Another thought - perhaps you should consider 2 articles. One about the crime of murder as it exists in New Zealand law, and the related statistics, plus a separate article about Murders in New Zealand, concerning the individual crimes. Have a read of Category:Crime and Category:Crimes for the distinctions. I am not going to edit your article yet because it is in your user page and I will await you placing it in the public project space when you feel it is ready. -- Cameron Dewe 12:52, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
