Hello! Our Manual of Style permits both spaced n-dashes and unspaced m-dashes. The MOS says: "Use either unspaced em dashes or spaced en dashes consistently in an article." If an article has already adapted the use of one or another, please do not change this. In most cases, it is better not to make stylistic changes in an article from one permitted style to another, unless you first build a strong WP:CONSENSUS for the change on the article's Talk page. -- Ssilvers ( talk) 20:24, 3 May 2015 (UTC) reply

Not a single style manual I've ever read endorses the use of spaced en-dashes in place of em-dashes. Google finds me lots of usage examples showing the en-dash used to indicate ranges or separate components of a title, but never in the usage apparently encouraged by Wikipedia's {{ snd}} template. I'm happy to learn from the experience if you can point me to a style manual that shows spaced en-dash usage as a replacement for em-dashes, but blindly citing Wikipedia policies holds very little weight with me as far as style goes. There are two different dash types for a reason, and I'm very much inclined to believe that the MoS needs revising in this case. Spaced en-dashes are distracting to me when I'm reading, because they are not proper usage (though again, I'm open to being corrected).

Obviously I can't revert your reversions of my edits over dash style without being accused of edit warring, so this is clearly best left until we have a chance to talk more. In fact, I probably won't respond further to this conversation until after I finish the paper whose research led me to make the edit in question. But I remember now why I so rarely edit Wikipedia any more. And might I say that I find it more than a little disturbing that you went trolling through my contribution history to dredge up and revert a year-old edit? Reverting the recent one I can kind of understand, even if it's annoying, but going through my history like that just feels like some kind of violation. I'm probably just stressed from finals (my last finals week of college, thankfully), but this whole situation still strikes me as very wrong somehow.
