All material in Wikipedia mainspace, including everything in articles, lists and captions, must be verifiable. All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed.If the point "likely to be challenged" means anything that isn't obvious to a non-expert (i.e. anything to which someone could reasonably say "Prove it!"), than almost everything you add should have an inline citation – in both a detailed article, and as part of a summary in another article. The other point to remember is that each article should be able to be viewed as a stand-alone work (even if they have sections that summarise other articles). If someone decides to print the article, or otherwise only looks at that particular article, they should still be able to verify the information presented. Also, the 'source' articles may be updated at some point in the future, and the referenced content may be removed as unneccesary, or the examples may be changed, etc., making any 'by-proxy' verification inherently unstable. The main situations when citations are not required are that you don't need to cite that the sky is blue or other bits of very common knowledge (although there is an opposing viewpoint), and within the lead when the material is referenced elsewhere in the article (except for direct quotations and contentious material about living persons) - Evad37 [ talk 06:00, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
