Social Media in Sri Lanka

With number of Facebook users in Sri Lanka exceeding 1 million, companies in Sri Lanka are waking up to the fact that Social Media channels are a force not to be ignored. These channels if managed properly can bring about positive brand recognition for companies, before companies jump on board the social media bandwagon, they need to clear design their strategy for going online in order to maximise their return.

The term Social Media has been around for quite some time, with some early websites such as Hi 5 and MySpace as well are more primitive forms such as forums and blogs. However this really came into the limelight with the introduction of Facebook in 2004. This project of Mark Zukerberg has redesigned the web experience as we know it.

Social Media unlike traditional marketing communication is a two way communication channel, where the customer becomes a promoter of your organisation, where organisations are creating brand ambassadors who will go and spread the word without no additional cost to the organisation. Organisations need to tread carefully here since if your product or service is not upto standard, you would be opening a channel for customer to vent about their problems instead of generating positive returns.

However if managed properly this channel can generate positive returns in the following areas of your business

Public Relations: Social Media channels are a cost effective method to disseminate all your press releases and events that you organise, where within seconds you can inform all your fans about what is happening by your organisation Customer Service: Increasingly companies who are using social channels are seeing customer raising inquiries and suggestions through these channels. Loyalty Building: Companies can use these channels to create loyalty among customers, where they are constantly reminder about the activities carried out by the company Networking: Lot of individuals in Sri Lanka are using websites such as LinkedIn to look for jobs and to spruce up their profile, also companies increasing do research about an individuals or company through these channels before deciding to do any work with them Idea Generation: Since this channel bring you closer towards customers, most customers feel that they are part of the company and will freely generate ideas as to how you can generate new revenue lines/reduce cost Customer Acquisition: Of Course the main use of this channel is for customer acquisition and to generate revenue
