Believe it or not, the cycle of four operas is indeed a trilogy. Wagner titled Das Rheingold as the premilary evening, Die Walküre as First Night, Siegfried as Second Night, and Götterdämmerung as the Third Night. Rheingold is always viewed as a separate work, as it eschews the three act structure, rather being four continous scenes without break.
