Yeah, the name strong/weak references comes from the fact that I'm a Mathematician/Physicist and computer programmer.
Strong/weak is a Physics expression (normally associated with nukes) and reference is a pointer in S3 (ICL language).
Obviously more work (by Sun Microsystems) was required.
