Par (golf) – new History section

The meanings of the terms par and bogey in golf became standardised during the early 20th century. In the United Kingdom, par had been long considered to be the perfect score on each hole. Bogey came into use in the early 1890s and was the number of strokes a good golfer should take on each hole; this was usually the same as the par, but was often one stroke higher on a few holes. As standards improved, bogey ratings became higher than the par on more holes. In the United States, bogey quickly became regarded as one stroke higher than par on all holes. [3] [4]
