This manual contains suggestions and advice for writing mathematics articles covering basic math topics in a way that keeps them accessible to the general audience. This manual should be used in conjunction with the Mathematics manual of style which gives advice for editing mathematics articles and the Wikipedia manual of style which gives advice for editing articles in general.

First, do no harm

The first and most important thing to remember when editing for accessibility, is do not sacrifice knowledge for accessibility. Every piece of an article is a contribution from somebody, usually it took them considerable time and effort to put that information in the article. If the information is accurate and contributes positively to an article then it should not be removed, only rewritten.

  • Do not remove technical information merely because it's too confusing to the average reader, replace it with more accessible content instead.
  • When rewriting technical information, make sure you understand it, and are still conveying the same information.
  • If you don't like the look of something, discuss it on the talk page, ask for a simplification, don't just remove it.
