Star Wars: Duel of the Fates or Star Wars: Episode IX - Duel of the Fates is an unproduced American epic space opera intended to be the third installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017). Prior to its cancellation, it was intended to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, who wrote a script with Derek Connolly.

Plot

Years after the Resistance's near-annihilation on Crait, Resistance heroes Finn, Rose Tico, Poe Dameron, and BB-8 attempt to destroy a First Order space station orbiting the moon of Kuat. After they fail to destroy the station, the team is saved by Rey, who had infiltrated the station herself disguised as a Tusken Raider. In the chaos, they steal a First Order Star Destroyer and barely escape the Knights of Ren. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, who is haunted by the spirit of Luke Skywalker, explores Darth Vader's castle on Mustafar. He finds a Sith Holocron that contains a message from the late Darth Sidious. The message, meant for Vader, instructs him to find Darth Plagueis's α Sith master Tor Valum before it self-destructs, injuring Ren.

The Resistance heroes return to their base on the planet Korilev, where they discover a massive amount of weapons present on the stolen Star Destroyer; with them they formulate a plan to capture the First Order's capitol on Coruscant. Rey also discovers the location of an ancient Old Republic beacon in Luke Skywalker's notes, which is hidden under the old Jedi Temple and could be used to call the rest of the galaxy to war. The spirit of Luke Skywalker appears to train Rey, who learns that Kylo Ren is seeking great power hidden on Mortis through a Force vision. Rey then is discouraged from the Jedi path due to her status as "no one" and Luke's spirit asking her to kill Ren.

General Leia Organa sends Finn, Rose, C-3PO, and R2-D2 on a mission to ignite the beacon on Coruscant. Rey, Poe, and Chewbacca go to the planet Bonadan on the Millennium Falcon to find. The rest of the Resistance escape Korilev aboard the stolen Star Destroyer after an attack led by Chancellor Hux, who destroys the entire planet. Kylo Ren meets Tor Valum on Mortis, who agrees to teach Ren.

Notes

In Star Wars Legends, Plagueis's master was said to be Darth Tenebrous.
