History

Hoffmann Mineral was founded in 1903 by Franz Hoffmann as a steam washing plant for Neuburg siliceous earth. At the time, the most important field of application for the siliceous earth was as a polishing agent and for household care products. In 1950, the company turned into Sonax GmbH. [1] 1971 übernimmt Hoffmann Mineral die Kieselerdesparte des Wettbewerbers Globus-Werke und ist seitdem der einzige Produzent von Neuburger Kieselerde. In 1971, Hoffmann Mineral took over the siliceous earth division of the competitor Globus-Werke and since then, they are the only producer of Neuburg siliceous earth. The last underground mine was closed in 1979, and since then, siliceous earth is only extracted through open pit mining [2] In 1991, Manfred Hoffmann junior took over the company and is the fourth generation to manage the company. [3]

Products

miniatur|Tagebau von Hoffmann Mineral (2006) Hoffmann Mineral is the only existing company to mine Neuburg siliceous earth. Every year, Hoffmann Mineral sells about 55,000 tons of the purified mineral. To achieve this, about 150,000 tons of raw siliceous earth must be extracted. [4] Neuburg siliceous earth is mainly used as a filler in elastomers, thermoplastics, paint and lacquer as well as polishing. [5] Important fields of application are the automobile industry, medical technology as well as the construction industry. [6]

Sales

Hoffmann Mineral distributes its products through sales partners in more than 100 countries. In addition to the main market in Germany, where about half of the siliceous earth production is sold, Asia and North America are important markets [7]
