Prevention of Latex allergy in the Workplace

Disposable gloves are often a required form of personal protective equipment in many occupations. Avoidance of the allergen is the best method to avoid Latex allergy. Some techniques include: Use non latex gloves (e.g. nitrile gloves) for activities that would usually require disposable gloves Using powder-free gloves will reduce exposure to latex protein and reduce the risk of latex allergy After removing latex gloves, wash hands with a mild soap and dry thoroughly

If you have a latex allergy then avoiding diret contact with latex gloves and latex containing products is important. If you have latex allergy you should consider the following precautions:

  • Avoid contact with latex gloves and products
  • Avoid areas where you might inhale the powder from latex gloves
  • Notify your employer and health care providers (doctors, nurses, dentists, etc) that you have a latex allergy
  • Wear a medical alert bracelet
