1966-1979

In the wake of the late 1960's wave of student protests around the world, many student protests across Flanders formed, reaching its peak in May 1968. These protests were diverse in character; some were against the francophone catholic establishment, others against the elitist nature of Flemish universities, which were seen as serving only the privileged. A feminist movement also expressed itself, demanding more societal and personal autonomy for women. Students, mainly from the the Catholic University of Leuven, began to form unions such as the SVB (Studenten VakBeweging). Around 1968, leftist students started organising in support of the workers, manifesting alongside miners, textile workers and ship builders. Socialist and communist ideas saw new relevance, as some students within this left-oriented group studied literature from Marx, Engels and Lenin, forming the intellectual basis for the eventual formation of AMADA (Alle Macht Aan De Arbeiders - All Power To The Workers).
