For the purposes of Wikipedia, this user's name is ethompson81215. I do not want to reveal my name simply because it is not necessary. I am a freshman at Georgia Southern University and am studying nursing. Some say Georgia Southern is a party-school. I would have to argue that every college is a party school. Granted, some more than others, but this fact does not make Georgia Southern a bad school. I am very proud to say that I attend GSU. I received the Georgia Southern LEAD scholarship, the Jacksonville State University Gem of the Hills scholarship, and also the HOPE scholarship. I graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and plan to maintain that GPA or better throughout college. I have also considered myself a helper or a fixer. I like to help people and animals. For instance, I am very concerned with animal conservation and the dwindling number of species we have in our world. My mother is a R.N. which is where my interest in nursing stemmed from. I love the fast pace of nursing and that nothing is ever the same. I could NEVER picture myself sitting behind a desk from 9 to 5.
I am completely new to working in Wikipedia and have only done one article so far. I took over the stub, Orangutan Foundation International and made it into a complete article. I plan on continuing to work on the article as I find more information. I have also made a few good faith edits to articles that I would like to think I know at least a little about such as, my hometown ( Newnan, Georgia) and my high school ( East Coweta High School). I would like to create another article on Wikipedia but that may or may not happen.
Seeing as how my generation tends to revolve around technology, I feel you better know how to use it or you are simply shit out of luck. That being said, I love technology. It's quick, efficient, and gets things done. I have never sent a hand-written letter and don't ever plan to. I find it much more practical to shoot a text or send a comment than to pay for envelopes and stamps, go to the mailbox, wait maybe 2 weeks, and then get a message back. I have always had a computer in my home and have been able to use it since I can remember. I thoroughly enjoy being able to access information on the internet rather than going to the library for a book.
I do not have any super out of the ordinary computer skills that a typical college student wouldn't have. I can do work on all of the Microsoft applications but that is about it. I can not HTML code beyond the realms of what I needed to complete my Wikipedia article.
Before my college English professor made me do work on Wikipedia, I was a little skeptical about it. My opinion is now changed. I do not agree with most people that Wikipedia is not an acceptable source on a paper. I believe that if the article you are pulling information from has credible sources, then the article is credible. I do not believe that the lack of paid professionals affects the quality of writing and editing. I do not believe a person needs a minimum set of qualifications to write about a topic. I believe if someone is passionate about what they are writing about, they can produce a very well written article. I LOVE that articles can be edited by anyone. However, I HATE that some people make edits that are not necessary or accurate. I have not had a teacher that allowed students to cite Wikipedia in a paper. So, in the past, I used Wikipedia to look up information about my topic and use the articles reference list to guide me to websites, books, or articles that I could cite.
I am a native speaker of English. I know to some extent (a very very small extent) French and Spanish. I do not know either of these languages enough to read them or speak them anymore. I would love to continue learning French with the hopes of becoming fluent one day.
