The Cancellidiales is a monotypic order of fungi holding 1 family Cancellidiaceae within the subclass class of Diaporthomycetidae. The family holds 2 genera; Cancellidium (Tubaki 1975) [1] and Obliquiminima W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde. [2]

History

reword

The aero-aquatic fungus Cancellidium applanatum in Queensland, Australia. [3]

Order Atractosporales was introduced to resolve the taxonomic problems of annulatascaceae-like taxa that were previously placed in Annulatascaceae family and also Sordariomycetes genera incertae sedis. Three families of Atractosporaceae, Conlariaceae, and Pseudoproboscisporaceae were included in the order by Zhang et al. (2017). [4] The monophyly (taxonomic grouping) of this order was not well-supported in previous studies (Luo et al. 2019). [5] Luo et al. (2019) also showed that family Junewangiaceae and genus Cancellidium, [1] also clustered in Atractosporales order, [5] and this agrees with our phylogenetic analyses, but with low bootstrap support. We therefore retain Cancellidium as Sordariomycetes genera incertae sedis. This ambiguous group may be included in this order with larger taxon sampling in future phylogenetic analyses. The divergence time for Atractosporales has been estimated as 106 MYA (million years ago), which falls in the range for family status. The status of Atractosporales members may therefore need revision following further study. Currently there are three families and six genera in this order (Hyde et al. 2020). [6] Cancellidium was later placed in family Cancellidiaceae K.D. Hyde & Hongsanan and order Cancellidiales K.D. Hyde & Hongsanan. [2]

Cancellidium is a remarkable fungal genus which has been collected from wood submerged in freshwater and has unique conidia that are important in dispersal in running streams. With such a remarkable morphology, one would have expected it to be a distinct family or order. The phylogenetic and MCC trees generated in this study Cancellidiaceae (137 MYA) [7]

Aquapteridosporaceae, Cancellidiaceae, Bullimycetaceae, and Pseudostanjehughesiaceae are only known from freshwater. [7]

In 2021, the monotypic genus of Obliquiminima was added to the family. [8]

In 2006, species Cancellidium pinicola was found on Pinus massoniana. [9]

Cancellidium and Canalisporium (hyphomycetes) from China. [10]
