John Malloy
John Malloy (born September 19, 1975) is an American illustrator, comics creator, and fine artist. His illustrations have appeared in magazines, cd covers, apparel, and posters, and his fine art employs a variety of media, including pen & ink, oil and acrylic paint, and digital. His first graphic novel, Amnesia, published in 2001, utilized 3 different media and to differentiate flashbacks from present-day scenes, and present-day from dream sequences. He is currently at work on a few new titles, including Channel One and Queasy.
Early life
Malloy was born and raised in Hanover Township, Pennsylvania, and began drawing cartoons and realistic works at 6 years of age. His father, a cemetery-caretaker, and mother, a coal-miner’s daughter, encouraged him to pursue his talents. Later, he earned a strong background in oil painting with trompe l'oeil artist Michael Molnar, and went on to teach himself in painting, pen & ink, design, and sequential art. He did not become interested in comics or graphic novels until he was 19.
Illustration, fine art, and comics
In his early twenties, Malloy began his career as an illustrator producing 2 pieces the Mirage Series for Magic: The Gathering, titled Mind Harness and Natural Balance, in addition to cover art for a variety of alternative newspapers. He also scripted, illustrated, and designed Amnesia, his first graphic novel for NBM Publishing. In his mid-twenties, feeling that his work was too derivative of artists he admired, he took a few years off from illustration altogether, and pursued other interests and jobs, including Art Handler/Truck Driver, restaurant line cook and server, and production artist/in-house designer for a worldwide advertising agency. In his spare time he experimented with new techniques and styles in a search to find his own voice as an illustrator and fine artist, and began work on a new graphic novel, Channel One which has since been put on hiatus. He also produced illustrations for Montauk Babies, an illustrated novella. Upon building this new portfolio he started work again as a freelance illustrator in early 2007 at the age of 31.
His illustrations have appeared in a variety of publications and iterations, with clients including Peace Tea, Focus Features, Dazed and Confused Magazine, BPM Magazine, These United State, Anomie Belle, Paste Magazine, Business Week, and Utne Reader. His work has been featured in Illusive #4 and The Big Book of Contemporary Illustration. He has also designed apparel for the band, Minus The Bear, and Diesel Clothing's Line, 55DSL. He's concepted and illustrated comic-book-styled translations of interviews with musicians for the acclaimed Lemon Magazine, and his graphic memoir, Queasy, a work-in-progress, appears in the Popgun Anthology by Image Comics, volume 4.
